Technical Y10 Race Car Rebuild

I must say Dave I prefer the analogue dials setup over digital. I changed my dials in my mk1 Astra rally car to the mk2 digi dash, but I always wished I hadn't in the end, it's cool seeing the needles whiz round when it's planted :D

Great progress I am loving the pictures

Cheers Andy

If I kept the analogue rev counter I don't think I would ever trouble the 10,000rpm limit.....

I do have some standard Y10 turbo dash but without a loom it would be easier to herd cats.

I have always fancied trying out one of these all in one digital units. Something like this one http://www.carbuildersolutions.com/uk/compact-all-in-one-digital-instrument Comes with all the wiring and, most importantly, some instructions!

I love that control panel. Looks like something captain Scarlett would have in his daily driver.

Thanks Kris

I may keep this panel but it can't stay in the same place as it is were the handbrake used to be. Might need one of those if it to make it back onto the Queen's highways (y)

Had a bit of time tonight to start to prep the interior for painting.

No major issues with rust to fix yet which is nice!

The photo below shows how much of the steel in the floor has been replaced with light weight aluminium (y) Nice and strong still where it needs to be though

Having a bit of a dilemma at the moment. The roll cage originated from a Y10 that did the RAC rally in 1993 and a few others and as such it has some historic scrutineering stickers. My plan is to repaint everything which would mean sacrificing these bits of history. But is this the right thing to do?

There are also some scrutineering stickers from when the current car was on the race track. These will be easier to save as they are taped to the rear windows

On one hand it would be nice to keep all the history together but throughout the evolution of this car it has always been about improving it and making it better, faster and lighter than it was before. So perhaps I should keep on the same track and look forwards rather than back..

Better consult nyssa7 and the Lancia Motor Club before I get too busy with the sander though.......

That would have been this car. I read the original body shell was scrapped as it wasn't that straight after its rallying career. I'd say keep em.. Nice bit of history

could you not cover them stickers and say 1cm around each one with paper taped on, paint the cage and then remove masking and apply a layer of clear coat. So its all shiny and new looking but with a homage to the past?

Just an idea, perhaps its me being mental now

Yup that was the original shell which was a bit of a banana shape after its rallying exploits. A lot of the yellow panels made their way onto the shell that was then used as the basis for the race car.

Not much of those panels left now. Only the basic frame of the doors and the bonnet skin

Trying to figure out a way to save them that doesn't end up destroying them in the process will be the challenge. Clear coating them might be a good option

Wow - you have been getting on! I'm so far behind with the world I had to dig out Retro Cars from the "unread" magazines pile as I'm a long way behind with those too

Can't help with the nostalgia questions, but at the end of the day, it was ONLY the roll cage that did the RAC Rally. I do have the engine that was used in the Blue Y10 in my garage, but as has been said, I scrapped the original shell when we found it had different wheelbase left and right. Unlike 70s Renaults, it wasn't supposed to

On the subject of white, have painted my kappa race car in white, can't remember off hand where the colour came from but I did ask for current Audi white - predictably its ludicrously expensive so something very close was used

Thanks Trevor

Strangely satisfying working on a Lancia with no rust to deal with, ......yet

Been doing a wee bit of prep for painting the engine bay. No shortage of things to sand :D

Need to modify the front cross member to give the turbo enough clearance. Hopefully get that done and the front in primer over the weekend.

Make sure it is 2 of the big bottles and careful not to blow the welds on your intake manifold or a badly attached checker plate panel will inadvertently fall off the underside of your car!

:ROFLMAO:, i just spat tea on my laptop

Christmas arrived a little early yesterday with a MoTeC M4 ECU in the post (y)
Ordered a new power supply for my old laptop today, hopefully that should help me retrieve the M4 map I last used so at least you can get you up and running

Failing that, its out with the hard drive, hook up through a cradle and try to find the right file
