Hi, I just rented a car for a long roadtrip for work. It ended up being a Fiat 500 with what seems to be a dualogic transmission. I got it about 10 minutes before the rental place closed so when I was driving it home and realised it was not a normal automatic car, I couldn't go back. I've never driven anything other than normal automatic cars. I drove home at about 15 mph not knowing what the heck I was doing. I'm afraid to take it on my long road trip. Is there any way to make the car fully automatic? If not, can someone give me a rundown on how to drive the car? Thanks so much!

Hi,

I drive a 2010 Bravo with a dualogic gearbox, and without going into too much technical detail, it is in no way a regular automatic gearbox. I guess the one in the 500 will not be that much different from the one I drive.

In fact the dualogic is an ordinary manual gearbox managed by a robot who handles the gear shifts for you. And since there is a manual gearbox underneath there is no way of making it a true automatic. The closest thing must be to drive it in "auto" mode, but it will still handle like a manual box.

I was used to driving a manual gearbox, but I'm totally sold on the dualogic. I love it.

But when you're used to a "genuine" automatic, I can imagine that it takes some getting used to...

Good luck and best regards from Belgium!

There is a section marked A/M, nudge it into there and on the dash 'Auto' should appear (y)

Failing that push it up and down the gears using + and - section of the shifter. Ultimately they're unbreakable and will moan if you're doing something wrong so don't be afraid to have a play.

They're better than a conventional auto when you get used to it, being much more efficient and using a lot less fuel :)
