Y10 4wd

I should have started this thread a while ago!

Car is now back in the UK (it did very well on the drive home). Just sorting MOT.

Look how different a 1989 Italian car looks underneath compared to a 1989 UK one: oh to not use salt on the roads! Had to change the balljoint rubbers and the nuts came off so easily!

Spot also the fancy Lancia gubbins on the axle..

Re: Y10 4wd

Could have been a summer car as they put white salt crystals direct to the road or spray salt solution from a tanker in that region also all do have snow tyres fitted during the winter months ( except the hire cars for tourists )

Ok been thinking about this one a lot today it's the humidity generally the med is pretty dry even in the winter car don't get condensation or even a frost covering at below zero temperature ours is out all winter here slightly frosted only, so in conclusion no moisture equaled less rust but when our car comes home it's always wet underneath where the alpine salt has been sprayed anyone have another answer ?

Interesting about the salt - not as simple as I thought but pleased it's survived so well.
Retest on the MOT snags was Christmas Eve.
Swapped the throttle body (interestingly there was a spare in the boot) as an experiment to try to sort the remaining emissions issue. Though the car ran v well, CO levels were a little above the max. Fair to say the experiment did not succeed - wonder if the attached readings are a record? Needless to say it did not run well, and broke down a few times on run home. Will swap back, service and explore lambda sensor.

Re: Y10 4wd

What injection system does the Y10 have David? I'm thinking it should be possible to use Multiecuscan to connect to it and see if that is able to shed some light on what is wrong?

Hi Freddy

It's a Bosch SPI system. No cat but it does have the lambda sensor. Have swapped for another lambda I found on a spare downpipe and have replaced plugs too. Putting the original throttle body back on has improved things greatly but won't know until tested. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Re: Y10 4wd

You have to think that in the UK any car that is in regular use will be constantly wet during the winter, unless they are kept inside there is no chance of drying out. Add the salt and grit to that and its no wonder they rot!

Any news on the MOT @aquamarine?

Re: Y10 4wd

Yes it does seem we have the perfect conditions for rust..Have a 5 litre can of dynax ready to treat and protect the Y10.

Am pleased to say it passed the MOT emissions test - just! I'd only managed to replace 3 of the 4 plugs so will do final one too. Am intrigued though that although the CO level is improved, the HC has worsened considerably - it seems to be passing through some fuel entirely unburnt.

Next on list is the rustproofing, some paintwork, interior (hopefully getting a seat cover from very helpful Italian forum member), and sorting the 4x4 system. Oh, and electric window. And stereo. And tailgate electrics. And...

My mk1 Punto passed CO level with 199ppm where the limit is 200ppm, wonder if thats a record for just passing, have no idea what to replace to bring that down
