Hei.

There is a vacuum hose connected to the throttle body / air intake / oil breather on my -93 Uno. What's it for? When I block it with my finger, nothing noticeable happens (unless it sucks on my finger ofcourse).

its all to do with economy it draws unburt gases back into the inlet to increase MPG

Well I guess it can't be many MPG to achieve on a little Uno. But why is it connected to the oil breather? These unburnt gases must be hot, and that doesn't actually help the performance of the car, does it?

Thanks CarMan.

If you wonder why I'm wondering about this: I'm planning an inductuion kit.

when you fit induction kit you can get little filters to go where that pipe goes

its not there for performance its only to re-use unburnt gasses which is for economy

Thanks Carman and Dave. Then I'll just plug the vacuum hose and attach a little filter to the oil breather.

Dave, is that K&N or Sparco? Looks very nice.

extend the oil breather pipe, down to the bottom of the engine bay. I dont remeber how the top of the uno engine, but on my cinq just sticking the filter on the top of the crank case leads to nasty crankcase type smells in the cabin.

Cinq Sporting - and yes, its broom yellow!

the vacuum is very minor infact its useless as newer cars prove but its there for a reason and that the date??? newer cars screw it up even more, if you want to mod your engine i will go through it with you

CarMan, that would be great.

The Uno has a little engine powered by 50 italian stallions that get tired at about 60 kmph. The volume is 1108 cc, so there aren't much torque either.

But I'm planning a trip to northern Norway during summer, and could use all the power the car's good for. That's why I'm planning an induction kit with a cold air feed from the front somewhere, just to give it a little extra at high speed. By the way, the trip is 1150 km long. [:0]

Only Greenfilters make a complete set for the Uno 1.0i.e. (I've learnt it's the same as my 1.1i.e. except stroke length) but it is extremely expensive. Norwegian price is 140£ and I don't like getting robbed at bright daylight. The K&N importer in Norway claims he can sell me filters according to my measures.

Do you think it's a good idea?

Can I eventually just extend the oil breather hose down the engine and under the car. Ofcourse after the MOT - it's about two months until that. I'll propably do nothing until it's passed.

The engine has run 120.000 km.

K&N do some nice and cheapish cold air induction kits http://images.google.com/images?q=cold+air+induction&svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&start=0&sa=N they will gige a little more BHP but not a lot, areas to consider because it a small engine are porting and polishing http://uk.msnusers.com/autodatabase/modifications.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=207&LastModified=4675457653184124092 this will give the biggest results, next is the exaust if it has a catalist you could consider a bypass pipe which allows you to remove it between MOTs and the rear box has to be removed and fit a through box this does wonders for the power

Project "After MOT"

What is actually cylinder head porting? Do I have to remove the cylinder head (have never done that before - wasn't actually planning to either until the gasket has to be replaced sometime).

Over to throttle body polishing. Is this done by dismantling the throttle body (that I have done before due to dirt clogging the vent down there), giving it a good clean and then using a Dremel etc. to polish it? What is the actual goal in polishing the throttle body?

Exhaust. The car has a cat and two rear silencers. The most rear is easy to chop off and replace with a straight pipe. The cat is also easy to replace with a straight pipe. But the 1st silencer is a bit more tricky. If I go for removing the cat and the 2nd. silencer, will it make any difference?

Induction. Extension of the oil breather down under the engine as arc suggested, plugging the vacuum hose, and replacing the air filter box with a K&N filter on top of the freshly polished throttle body routing cold air towards it through bumper etc. Good?

Thanks, Morten.

porting and polishing is best done with the head off and valves removed ( i tend to go to a scrappy and get a second head to work on ) this keeps your car on the road. porting and polishing removes all the mould left when mass produceing as the pictures show and increase flow and performance which is the same when talking about the throttle body, the idea is to smooth everything and open the ports to suit the gasket which increases flow which inturn increases BHP, now the exaust 2 back boxes are there to silence the engine which will restrict flow so a single straight through system gives the power back, most people think its the catalist that reduces the power flow when its a combination of the cat and back boxes, take a good look and read all the info on the link i provided it explaines it all in depth,,, happy moding
