Got our electric bill for our student house

first quarter was 81 quid, not bad cos it was an estimate on the previous tennants figures

got our second bill the other day 376.82 for three months

That equates to approx 75 quid between five!

Rang up powergen to complain but that did a fat lot of good :(

Is that an average figure for a bill, or am i better just setting fire to my student loan cos i mite as well if bills are gonna be close to that figure all the time!!

or someones bought a fan heater, they eat electric bad :(

Oh bugger!! Me and my m8 have one cos the heating packed up over winter
I bet that has been a contributing factor to why the bill is large!! :bang: :bang:

Good job its gettin warmer! (y)

At least we mite have discovered the problem!! Itll b interesting to see the next bill to see if you were right!!

Cheers everyone

My advice - dont buy one (well do cos they r well gud!)

That is a lot of leccy, a quarter is about 93 days or 2232 hours, so if you had a 2kw fan heater on permanently it would be 4463 KW. At about 6p a KW that would be £267.00.

It seems a lot of electricity unless you all have fan heaters on all the time day and night. Have you checked the figures yourself.

I have a 3 bed house, and I have a (stupid, annoying) pre-pay meter. I reckon it costs me about £20 a month or so. Students tend not to be so economical though... :D

i got mine a couple of days ago, £185 for 2 of us for 3 months - everyones in my building was around the £200 mark, most a bit more than mine, but there are 3 in most flats

One other thought, did you give the company a fresh reading on the day you moved in? Could be that you are paying for the previous tenants usage. I had the same problem once when moving out - forgot to give a final reading and ended up getting chased for the following tenant's bill as well as my own. The amount is still being disputed with the company .

Fair points made about electric heaters, some, for example oil radiators, give out huge amounts of heat these days for 2kw or so but that's 12p an hour+!

Just had my latest phone bill from orange at £45....expected to be £20, apparently they had a system failure so all of my inclusive minutes were charged for the last 3 days of that bill....

Apart from getting rid of those fan heaters (at least the weather's on the up now) go to www.uswitch.com you enter how much energy you use and they will tell you who to switch to to save £'s. I think they will even sort out the switch for you, though I'm not 100% sure on that one. IMO, from personal experience, your current supplier isn't the best.
