Hi guys,
few issues with my mjet i'd like to ask help for.

Firstly is the performance, very flat with lots of lag then a bucketfull of turbo.
next is the economy, its crap- lucky to get 37-40 round town, if i drove any steadier i'd fall to sleep.
finally is a combustion clatter whilst moving off when cold (not the tappets) only happens when the car moves away, suspected ecu diesel timing advance but why?

any ideas?
 
the 1.3mj does suffer from initial turbo lag (course it will its only a 1.3 and doesn't have the CC's behind it) however its actually a good engine once you get used to it.

driving style is obviously important here, if I want good MPG I wait until turbo cuts in then change up (using the turbo but not for long).....what did you drive before may I ask?
 
the car it replaced was a 3cyl 1ltr suzuki swift. as for driving style the revs are never above 2500, i am a careful driver who hates visiting the pumps.

the car is going in soon to have the egr valve blanked off and a diagnostic to see if anything is amiss.

so far I have airflow meter, air pressure sensor and egr valve on the list of possible areas for change.

all I want is higher economy and the ruddy combustion rattle when cold to get lost and i'm happy
 
I wouldn't blank off the EGR i'd just change it.

My Dad has run a garage since 1970, he is a bit of a derv wizard. believe me when I say EGR systems are the pits of the earth.

He even knows a few RAC roadside assistants that even carry a selection box of blanking plates.

Funny the comment about the ECU contacts, I have run my idea without the MAF plugged in, half the time I can drive it with the service light on, other times it goes unnoticed :eek:

I'm by no means having a pop at Fiat here but has anyone else noticed the airbox/engine cover makes a great bass bin? any vibration is increased 10 fold by it rattling away on top of the engine, but I've put that to the sword by adding foam and better securing it to the spiggots.

also, MAF is being changed today (y) wish me luck
 
Bit of an update for you.

last Thursday we changed the Airflow meter and saw a bit of improvement.

Friday Dad had the car in and blanked off the EGR system,
firstly, the amount of crap the EGR puts back through its no wonder the car was sluggish.
secondly the difference in the car now is remarkable, its got much more low down grunt, my judder (which I thought was clutch but Dad said was a misfire) has gone. the combustion rattle as I move off is gone. the vibration noise has gone (car is ticking over really quiet and smooth) and now at 30mph + you would be hard pressed to tell it was diesel.

I'd never have thought the EGR would cause so much trouble but I suppose that 45 years in the trade the old man does know best.

only one small issue now is that I need to get the car over to fiat to get the EGR sensor switched off, but I'll live with that for now
 
just wondering if anyone can help, i've just had a 1.3 Mj diesel Idea with the duralogic box. it's been fine no problems, till this morning I opened the drivers door and did not hear the buzzing sound that normally happens got in the car put my foot on the brake pedal turned the key the dash lit up but it would not turn over nothing at all? any ideas?
