connect an iPod to your headunit

  • How can I hook up my ipod to the cars stereo?
  • now this is a basic and very general guide.
just to give you some pointers.
obviously it varys between install and the models of stereo you have in your car.
  • If you have a new punto GP with blue n me I gather you can pretty much hook the ipod in there so I’ll leave it at that.
  • For other models
  • If you stereo has a line in connection either on the front or rear then you can plug the ipod in with a male/male audio cable.all music played is controlled directly via the ipod

  • Unless you have a line in then you cant go with a straight to the head unit(HU) connection.
  • for cassete HU's (you dont still have cassete do you?)there are cassette to ipod(or other mp3 players)adapters

Then there are add on’s such as the iTrip

  • iTrips transmit the ipod music via FM and you tune the stereo to the iTrips frequency.
These are compatible with all Head Units, though have had mixed reviews on quality & interference.
  • Another option for CD changer compatible HU’s are the cables which connect the iPod to the HU via the changer connection.
These however mean your cd changer needs disconnected unless you have 2 sets or as with some higher end models of cd changers a second changer connection or the cable has a 'pass through connection).
  • Many newer head units are compatible with ipod either directly or with an add on cable.
The benefits here are you can actually control the ipod via the head unit and/or remote rather than having to control the ipod as well.
  • also the safety aspect of not having to use the clickwheel on the iPod should be considered as well

  • kenwood set up shown for example but all the major manufacturers offer add ons for compatible HU's and a lot have newer iPod ready HU's that dont require any other hardware
  • now while the guide has focused on iPods there are other MP3 players out there.unfortunatly for OE connections the iPod is the main supported unit though line out equipped HU's should allow any MP3 player to be connected

Re: connect an iPod to your headunit

i have the kenwood unit with the ipod input lead. it is great to control the songs from the HU or remote but if you have an 80gb it can be tiresome finding the albums in the middle as it loads each album then you push next album - can take a few mins. also you need to make sure your files are organised propperly. the soound quality is really good tho so thats a bonus!!!!

Re: connect an iPod to your headunit

Hi, firstly apologies if this has been answered before but this is my first time using the forum.

I have a 57 reg panda 4x4 with the original blaupunkt hu with radio/mp3 cd player. I also have the fiat aporoved iPod cable which charges my iPod and treats it as a cd autochanger. I can control iPod via steering wheel controls

This worked fine with my 5th gen iPod but unfortunately this iPod broke so I have got new 160gb iPod classic.

I can use my new iPod with the cable and use the steering wheel controls and hu to change playlists etc as usual but the big display on the iPod screen that says track playing only shows the song that was playing when u first connected it and does not update as new tracks are played. There is small text underneath the large text which scrolls with current track playing and artist but not with album details and it's a bit small to read when driving.

Is there a firmware or cable upgrade available for the 57 fiat panda iPod cable/blaupunkt cable that gives better functionality for the newer iPods and in particular will charge my iPhone.

If not I am considering a tom tom car kit for my iPhone 3g. This has a 3.5 mm line out socket for aux input to my blaupunkt hu. Which aux cable would I need for this?

Thanks very much in anticipation of ur help and apologies if I've posted this in the wrong place. Forgive me. I'm a newbie!

Rob

Re: connect an iPod to your headunit

An easy way to keep your iPod requires a regular cell phone carrier, but make sure it is adjustable and fully opened. An easy way to find these is the search for those who say they can keep your cell phone or Palm Pilot.
