Hi guys need advice, so basically wife took car out to go shopping and all ok but when she got back in the car it wouldn’t start so bumped started it to get her home and to be quick we have done the following;
New battery
New starter motor
Checked all relays and fuses for starter motor
Still won’t start and not even trying to tick over? Any advice would be great and it had a new alternator last year.

Engine earth?

Stick a jump lead between a large metal part of the engine itself (away from moving parts) there is usually a nice lifting point to attach to, and the other end to the negative of the battery.

If it then turns over ok you have a broken engine earth strap.

It should look something like this, everything appears to work normally and there appears to be plenty of power but literally no effort at all from the started.

Hi Andy cheers for the reply and yes it looks like the attached video but we put a jump lead on the negative of the battery and to a metal part of the car and it’s still the same? Any other ideas?

Need to connect the jump to the Engine. The original cable goes from battery negative to body ground (cross member) and finally to the gearbox ...

Make sure it’s to the engine, from the battery to the engine. Connecting it to a metal part of the body work or something which isn’t directly the metal of the engine won’t work.

Morning guys I tried putting cable from negative to engine and still won’t turn over absolutely nothing......all lights come on the dashboard but nothing at all when turning the key, even tried the spare key and that’s the same??

Hi,

have a look @ fuse F35 and relay T18 in the engine bay connection box … You can also try to direct feed the starter puller with +from the battery, that would rule-out the starter itself.

There is another fuse involved, though nothing at all would switch on if it's blown. It is located in the inner fuse box. The ignition switch may also give the same symptoms …

Hi guys can someone please look at this pic (think I’ve attached it) of a new starter motor for punto grande as a guy came round today to look at the car as it won’t start still and says that the starter motor is wired up wrong that the two wires shouldn’t both be together but when we removed the old starter motor they WERE both together on the back nut? Is he talking rubbish?

Hi,
As shown in the diagram posted earlier, there should be two heavy wires on the large stud (longer one in your pic). One goes to the battery and the other goes to the alternator. This is Fiat cost cutting on cables, ideally alternator and starter should have their own cables to battery.
Bigger question is did you reconnect the small wire when fitting the new starter? Sounds like you had a faulty starter but introduced a different fault when fitting the new one.

Hi Robert thanks for the reply but what do you mean the small wire?

He was talking BS actually, as per the drawing and as Robert said, the long strud receives power from the battery and is also used as a connection port for the alternator, which is actually a clever way to cut costs (and save weight).

The "small" wire is the one that receives power from the engine bay connection box relay (T18) to engage the starter pinion on the flywheel and close the main starter contactor …

So you should have THREE wires connected to the starter relay: one very big coming from the battery +, one smaller one coming from the alternator and one even smaller coming from the connection box, with both the big ones connected to the long strud.

Have you inspected the fuse and relay as suggested ??

Hi Bernie sorry off to do that now (wife’s lost faith in me) what do you mean 3 wires as when we took old motor off there was only 2 wires connected onto the long stud ( 1 from live and 1 from alternator and connected in the plastic clip) there was no 3rd wire?

Bernie there is no fuse in 35

Hi Bernie how strange looked in owners manual says F35 is starter motor but not one in there and also most of the layout in the engine fuse box doesn’t correspond with the manual so how do I know which fuse is for the starter motor?

Hi,
Sorry for slow reply I'm working in the USA at the moment.

There should be a small wire to a third terminal on the starter motor. This is the control that causes the contactor to energise and power the starter. If it had fallen off that I would be the original fault .look for a wire about 3mm in diameter neer the starter. It should be connected to a small stud or push on connector on the starter. The mechanic you called is useless. Sorry I can't post images easily as I'm using a tablet.
