map sensor replacement huge bill

Hi all, I have a GP 2009 1.2 8v. At the weekend it wouldn't start, was cranking and just starting but then cut out straight away, temperature gauge raised even though it was cold. Was taken to the garage, sods law the next morning when they started it it worked fine. Took it home and the next night it happened again. Back to the garage, they said it was the map sensor. So they ordered a new sensor from fiat, they said the sensor was 111 (not sure if this is before or after tax), but the total bill is 248, well that's a lot of labour cost considering they charge 48 per hour, even if the 111 was before tax, I thought these sensors were quite easy to fit? I do trust this garage and am not questioning whether it was the map sensor but this amount was just so unexpected. Thanks for any advice and excuse any typos I am on my kindle

Re: map sensor replacement huge bill

i hope you ask for the old part as normally they just need a clean. did you enjoy the ride?

map sensor is 1 or 2 screws

even with 1 hour diag i think its a bit too much.

Definitely asking some questions before I hand over the cash then. How annoying.

I'd change your garage. Ask friends for recommendations...

Re: map sensor replacement huge bill

I had mine fail on my 56 1.3 diesel multijet GP before Christmas. My garage charged me 135 all in. Diagnostics, new part and fitting.
Being of the non grease monkey type thought it was ok.

To be fair the RRP of the OEM sensor is about that mark

source:

http://www.shop4parts.co.uk/?name=st...3251&sku=43442

most garages charge a fixed rate for diagnostics And if someone had to be sent 20 miles to the dealership to pick the part up.. you'll soon clock up a couple of hours labour to cover their costs...

The Map sensor can be a bugger to diagnose the fault could be down to several things..

battery

earth strap

ecu earth

map sensor

coolant temperature sensor...

just hope they have managed to diagnose it correctly

Re: map sensor replacement huge bill

Just picked the car up, turns out was 111 for the sensor, 35 for diagnostics, plus extra labour cost as the code was saying it was the water temperature sensor that was wrong however when they checked it it was fine, as was all the wiring ect, so they tested the map sensor which was giving a reading of 112 degrees. Plus vat of course. So clenched my teeth n paid up, have to say it did sting a bit! Thanks for everyone's advice

Pretty sure Leeds would cost more than 230 mate.

Anyways given this is such a common fault I'd have just bought the part off ebay and attempted it myself. If it works great, if not then thats the chance you take.

Shop around buddy for a good garage.

I failed MOT today.

MOT testing place quoted me 350 for 2 new tyres and front coil, including labour.
Another garage quoted me 350 for 4 new tyres and 2 front coils, including labour.

Ridiculous!
