My GP decided to give up on me about 9 weeks ago, but due to being extremely busy with new house and new job I haven't had time to get it fixed. Anyway, got it towed to the garage and they range me today. Needs a new alternator, belt and tensioner. Mainly I was wondering the rough price for an alternator? IMO they are pricing it slightly over the top.....

Please help :)

Basically it's lots. Maybe £350 for the alternator? Was when mine went, although this was a 1.9MJ. Then maybe an hour or twos labour to go on top.

If it's an air-con equipped model they're a pain to change due to the weird design, plus to get it out means de-gassing the A/C and moving the pipes over.

Weird it needs an alternator, belt and tensioner. Did it seize due to water ingress? (ie. read the sticky at the top of the GP section)

So £400 for a Fiat Dealer is a steal TBH. Tensioner is about £40 and belt £20. And its about an extra £40 on the alt because it has air con. They did offer me a recon for £100...but no warranty.

Hmmmmm. It did fully conk out on me when it was about -10. Started flashing up every single warning light going.

hi
having just changed my alternator 14 days or so ago ...dealer was a nightmare keep supplying the wrong parts ..since you mentioned the tensioner i guess you have aircon like me ..all in for parts alternator ,belt and i did my tensioner .was a personal choice ...came to £300..i gave up on my discount to get the parts the following day VOR ..so you should get them cheaper if you are prepared to wait a couple of days if they aren't in stock ......if the garage who is doing the repairs supply and fit ,they will add a mark up to the parts ,and as previously stated there is the cost of discharging and recharging the aircon ,roughly 30 mins ..so you are looking in the region of £400 plus though you may get about a £40 surcharge back for the old alternator ..i recommend you supply the parts yourself ,will be cheaper

If it was seizure due to water ingress (freezing), you'll want the modified drain pipe to stop it happening next winter.

Touch wood I have very good experiences with my new dealer. (EG My original dealer wanted me to pay for a new radiator due to "a stone chip." Took it here, done on warranty because the hole was on the wrong side.) Just got to decide weather or not the extra £100 for new alt is worth it or not.

Surely I want this fitting whether it was water ingress or not anyway!!!???

Supply a fit a brand new alternator (couldnt be repaired owing to a cracked case) to a 1.2 £330 all in. My garage had never done one before and managed to do it without having to de-gas the aircon although they said it was a struggle.

danny boy .unfortunately mine failed through wear and tear ..but have a question you may have an answer to...do you know if you can get the brush box pack as a seperate item ??? reckon it's that that is failing ..change them all the time on trucks, wondered if you can get them for the grande ,local dealer says no ,but they aren't great ,i usually have to take the old item to them with the part number on it .lol..cant see them being that dear.
