Hello All.
After reading through the forum I found quite a few threads on the common EGR valve problems, just thought I'd put my tale up incase it helps somebody else.
Right I have a MJET sporting 56 plate, with 35k.
My fault seemed to develop over 2 months, it started as an intermittent fault maybe twice a month where the car felt like you were setting off in third gear and would usually stall.
This progressed to only a few good days a week finally to no power below 2300rpm. This made pulling out of junctions dangerous and must have taken a huge toll on the clutch.
I was also struggling to get above 32mpg.
The problem was the engine management light was not on so the dealer would not look for a problem, and charge you £70 to do a code scan for the funnies.
Luckily after about 3 weeks of this my engine management light came on. I like to think I speeded up the process by getting a rubber mallet and beating the valve. This also helped to diagnose the problem as after whacking and reving the engine I got a cloud of filth and some of the performance was restored.. :D
On the way to the dealer I heard a massive thud- I thought a little barsterd child had thrown a brick at my car, but it turned out a spring had broken. It sounded like people were smashing plates in the back seats going over bumps etc.
And to help people who are worried about the 3rd year warranty both things were covered - AND my car was 5 months late on a service (under the milage though)
I hope this long ramble will be of help...
So..
Lack of power, stalling, feeling like its in third gear trying to pull off.
Lots of smoke
Running rough / noisier
Low MPG
A 'fart' and 'shudder' when you switch the ignition off
Lackluster reving from idle to 2300rpm
(if you are still under warranty try hitting the egr with a rubber mallet to loosen the crud and give it a blast - you don't have to remove the part this way)

Don't be fobbed off by its a MAF/ Turbo problem- chances are its the EGR. Make the dealer drive it and then demand a test drive in a dealer MJET. This helped me when they refused there was a problem, as the engine managment light was not on / no code.

However they will not cover the horn / boot leak on third year.

Oh and its great to see 57mpg return down the M62 :)

Fini!

Good story well told and probably of a lot of use to MJet owners! (y)

They replaced the faulty EGR with a new part, not sure whether its a modified design.
The work would have cost £420.00. Spring and EGR.
They did wash it though :)

I have had the same problem for the past month also!. My cars going in on tuesday for a new EGR valve. Car still driving fine apart from a little power loss now and again. Engine management light comes on then off every couple of days. Hopeing to see some improvement once the new valve is fitted:)

:confused:majority of faults I deal with are with no engine light. just because its not on dont mean you kind find the fault. If I even suspected the EGR was at fault I wouldn't even hook it up to any diag machine.

Mileage dont matter as they are both non-servicable items.

However they will not cover the horn / boot leak on third year.

First 2 years only

T14086 - just my experience. The two dealers I visted told me thy would not investigate the problem unless there was an error code recorded on the ECU.
I thought this was very harsh as there was an obvious problem with the car. They blamed this on the conditions of the third year warranty.
I was told if they were to look at the car, and no error code was found there would be a £70 fee to pay for the diagnostic - the other dealer would charge this regardless as they would not include this in the warranty claim.

Again one dealer told me there wouldn't be a problem with as they are non-servicable items, the second said I would be ok as I was not in breach of mileage and time on the service.

Is this a common problem with dealers? Are they each to their own codes of conducts / levels of BS served up?

I turned out to be quite lucky with the spring going at the same time, as this meant they would find a problem and the £70 fee wouldn't be payable.

T14086 do you work for a Fiat dealer?

Excellent thread! Been having this problem with my mjet for a couple of weeks now with no warning lights on the dash, took it into the dealers and they told me it could be one of 3 things which included the EGR valve. Just had all 3 parts ordered from Italy and theyre being fitted on Monday, all covered by the warranty! :D
