This week's poll is a sort of Room 101 type thing.

Take the 6 basic entertainment mediums of music, art, literature, tv & radio, video games and the internet and decide which is the one you couldn't possibly do without. Be warned though the obvious answer isn't as obvious as it looks as you can only choose one and once you have done so the rest cease to exist. Variation will occur only within the medium you have chosen so all sorts of music would exist but there would be no artwork or videos to accompany it. The internet would be full of interesting things and the convenience of modern life but would have no pictures, music, fanfic, youtube etc

Over to you - what do you choose and why?

Bit of a close one between this and tv/radio BUT I think music just edges it out for me.

I dunno...there's just always been something about the power of music. Videos, covers etc are a nice little bonus but there are plenty of songs where I can remember where and when I first heard them.

TV/Radio is also a close run for me, but I lean towards music as well. I love my music too much to do without it. I can't play a damn note, but I enjoy listening to music, and I do like many different types of music. I listen to music quite a lot, and it does have the power to determine how I am feeling at any given time. If I listen to something mellow, I will relax. If I listen to something fast paced, I can keep up with that fast pace. And so on, etc.

So, yes, I like the TV. Radio as well, but then Radio simply wouldn't be entertaining without the music, so that kind of kills that idea off. I do enjoy watching the TV a lot, but music just edges it ever so slightly.

The internet? Well, I would struggle without it.

Literature, again I would struggle. I do like to read every now and again.

Video games are entertaining, but equally frustrating, so I think I could live without them.

And I just don't have any interest in art whatsoever.

I honestly thought I'd be torn between music and literature when I first started thinking about the premise of this question but it turns out it was pretty easy. I have music on for probably a good 60-70% of my waking hours and I just couldn't imagine life without it.

One of my greatest pleasures is a long drive and new tracks on the stereo. Heaven :)

Literature for me!

I just think literature is the most captivating of them all. Games, videos and music can all be pretty immersive but I don't think anything can really capture the mind like a good book.

Has to be internet. I spend from 7am till 5pm in the van, listening to the radio as the cd player is broken, & it often drives me crazy, listening to the same tunes over and over...

At least with the internet, i can do any of the above if i want to...

Are you remembering the room 101 aspect? All the other entertainment ceases to exist so it'd be internet without music, youtube, films etc.

ahh, i had forgotten that, im still pretty sure i'd avoid music, despite the huge part it has played in my life, but might also avoid internet too now knowing the new info...

WELL, in fairness, there is a difference between music and radio - radio tends to play the same ""latest chart"" **** over and over and over again all day long... least if it's just music, and you can control what you listen to etc. then that's much better, so probz go with that :)

How does that work though because surely without all the other things the internet would be nothing!

It'd be like the internet back in the 90s. you'd still have forums like this one but it would just be pages of text with no emoticons, pictures, ads etc

Yeah internet would just be MSN messenger and Wikepedia and stufff!

When my house is finished we hope to have a music room, sound proofed walls and 2 bean baggs in the middle with a very good stereo system and speakers all around to just sit and enjoy the sounds.

Music deffinitly for me, can't remember the singer but his quote was: 'no music, no life!'
When i get a new cd i can't wait to go to work, just because i then get to sit in the car for 40mins. Of undisturbed musical heaven.
And every member in my family plays a different instrument so we jam a lot together very rewarding, and always have a big christmas performance.

Does anyone ever use MSN messenger anymore?? ....just interested, as far as i was aware, most people used facebook chat for example.. might be wrong though.

Sound proof room would be good, gets to a point where the neighbours banging along to your music, and paying you a visit every time you turn it up to 11 gets tiresome... :p haha

In my experience people actually playing instruments is unfortunately dying a death. From Primary 6 i played Trombone, and got up to Grade 7/8, playing in all the school orchestras, wind bands, regional bands etc. My high school was reasonably big, and there was a good 5 or 6 of us just playing trombone alone, so we were always in competition with each other to exceed. The amount of fun we had, often going on "band camps" skipping school, and just the overal feeling of performing in concerts was fantastic, and we had so much banter inbetween.
Then, along came the government, and thought too much money was being spent on expressive arts, and the music budgets in particular were hit hard. Our high school lost its music department, all the orchestras, bands etc, just stopped. That banter we had, and the experience of performing would be lost. We protested, we actually made the news, and bbc panorama (i'll look for the link) but sadly lost. Thankfully we had "one final concert" where all the pupils and ex pupils, even old teachers ect. all got together to create a super orchestra, and it was over whelming to go out with a bang.
The point is you do not even have to play or have played an instrument to enjoy music, be immersed in music, and its really quite incredible just what a huge part it plays in so many people lives.

MSN is dead. they discontinued it about a month ago and shifted everything over to Skype. I think you can still access it through hotmail, but the actual messenger program can no longer be used or downloaded? though there are ways around that via third party sites.

I preferred MSN but barely used it tbh, i think Facebook and phone messengers have taken over (the likes of Whatsapp etc)
