I have been looking at a pdf print of x250 eLearn for Starting and Recharging. Diagram definition is poor, but the internal connections of the alternator are different to that for the x244.

I am prompted to wonder if the original alternator on your vehicle has been replaced with one from/for an x250? Just a thought, and I am not sure that it would fit. One thing that I noticed on the x250 diagram was an internal compnent wired between B+, and the regulator/field circuit. Due the poor definition I could not read the component symbol, but anything connected to B+ is suspect.

You asked about the validity of the diode test. It should reveal a problem, but modern multimeters are very sensitive, and can somtimes give misleading results. The test lamp would be a sensible confirmation, before parting with cash for a replacement alternator.
