My 2017 MH alternator behaviour appears bog standard on the same engine etc.
I thought there was no intention to fit smart alternators to chassis earmarked for motor homes? The 12v power to my fridge when engine is running remains stable.
Hi Ray, read that link and still not sure whether they are or not as this was a 2016 thread. They seem to be suggesting that 2017 Euro 6 might have smart alternators. It also states that there are clever electronic voltage stabilisers being fitted in the motorhome electrical control unit or black boxes.
How do you know yours is a bog standard alternator.
I have done the test in the video and it does not behave in the way described for a smart alternator. If I run the engine for 20 minutes or so it will continue to charge the leisure batteries during that time so I guess the output has not dropped off when the cab battery is fully charged. Whether this is because it is smart and can detect the demand thus keeping the output volts high or because it is bog standard I cannot say. All I do know is in operation there appears no difference to the euro4 and 5 models I have had in the past.
Talk about a useless video, 'sure drive up a random road, for a random period of time, at random engine load, a random electric load, with random battery state of charge, and a random temperature and look at the random values on your meter and draw your random conclusions' Smart alternator voltage output varies according to load / demand, engine and battery temperature (often guestimated from IAT)
I read on the web that Fiat say "The 150hp motor can also be had in EcoJet trim, with Start&Stop, a smart alternator, electro-hydraulic power steering and an Eco function, to reduce fuel further."
Perhaps that means that to get the smart alternator you need the 150 Ecojet as opposed to the 150 Multijet?
According to the technical information I have, the intelligent alternator is fitted to Euro 6 vehicles as part of the Start&Stop system. If you don't have S&S, it should have a traditional alternator.
