“Whine” after gear change :

I’ve 1.3 multijet , when the motor is hot and motorway running , when either changing gear or taking my foot of the accelerator at about 60-65 mph , I get an "after noise" from the gear change when its engaged , as though the clutch plates are touching slightly ? .. also get the whine just after engaging the gear in normal traffic after a long run with engine hot , this occurs in all gears.
It’s not all the time, but is very irritating. I am just waiting and listening for it to occur Anyone have any ideas experience of a similar problem on the 1.3 multijet… Therefore I can go back to the dealers…. With confidence…

Hi

Took the doblo to the dealers , went out for a test run with the lead engineer, who did notice the whine, got a phone call at 300pm to pick it up , apparently the whine is to do with a return feed to the fuel tank, there has been other issues with other multijet engines? they didn't fix it as this problem is with fiat for a master resolution ? I've just been added to a list....

Any thoughts anyone ?

Glad to see that the dealers were willing to help you :) about adding you to the list though, it does happen but how long have you got to wait is the million dollar question. Make sure you keep on with them, don't let them forget about you!

Aside from that, if it gets worse, go back, or maybe get another trained mechanic to have a listen and see what they think it could be :)

Hi

An update on the whine from the gear change, this has got worse on the last long trip. In NO way is the problem noise related to the return feed on the fuel.. If so the problem would occur when stationary , revving a hot engine… It’s just common sense. The noise only occurs when hot + engaging and disengaging a gear normally 2nd/3rd/4th and some times 5th gear .. I suspect a problem with a “part” of the clutch

When I rang the dealer, stating the above he stated that £364.00 of warranty work had been carried out ? but he stated when I picked the car up that no work had been done !! and I was added to a list waiting for a resolution from Fiat ?

I’ve therefore booked the car in on Friday. WAR ON , but keeping cool and calm

Ahh the buggers  well you definately need to tell them what the previous guy said when it was picked up, and demand they let you watch what work is done on your car. At least this way you can see what is really going on.

Not to tar all auto mechanics with the same brush, but perhaps he put it down so it didn't look like he hadn't done anything?

Just a thought, hope they do sort it, as I said, demand you watch at least then it's peace of mind what has been done.

Right then…

The dealer has stated (100%) that the noise is related to the return feed from the “fuel injection system” the noise resonates from the return pipes…

Still don’t believe them but will write to fiat, as apparently they do know about it…

I will be writing to ensure that the problem encountered is logged formally….

Still war on….

Additionally what about this one, my front lights are still misting up on rainy days,,, the dealer general manager has states they “all” do this and will not replace.. (Yes they do clear on DRY days) my reply was, so when the vehicle is out of warranty I should only take the vehicle for an MOT on a dry day… no reponse obioulsy this will be taken up with fiat “central”

As far as I’m concerned the fiat dealers have a lot to be desired ….

Yeah, i've managed to find two Fiat dealers in my area in South Wales that are the bees knees :) It's a shame it can't be said for elsewhere though, I have had a few bad experiences and that's before even buying one. Should have one by the end of next week though :)

Hope Fiat take you seriously and sort it out :) maybe time to find another garage once that warrantys up eh! :(

He's talking b*ll*cks!!:yuck: :yuck:

My wife's 2004 Doblo's headlights do not mist up on rainy days. Sounds like you need to start quoting consumer law :nono:to the idiot :tosser:.

Get a quote from another Fiat dealer to supply and fit new headlights and advise the idiot you will take him to the small claims court for this amount unless he behaves.

These people are used to abusing customers and getting away with it. Stand up for yourself.

There was a thread about misting head lamp units on here - it gave a good solution to the problem.

Contrary to what you may think, the complete unit is not totally sealed. They have a small L shaped tube that allows accumulated water to escape (in the event of water getting in it runs out the back 'drain' rather than shorting out your lamp electrics when it reaches the bulb fittings if the water level was to continue to rise that far. With fair use you may rarely see some misting at the bottom of the unit: when it is particularly humid. Bear in mind the heat generated in the engine, while at a stand still, should be enough to keep this in check and it will normally not be noticable. In the year that I've had my Doblo there has been only one occasion where almost the entire indicator and fog lamp 'units' were totally misted - this is when I was stupid enough to use a higher pressure hose directly around (and at) the headlamps & while the bonnet was sitting 'popped' open. If your lights (is it both of them?) are doing this in normal driving I would say that the join between the clear front and the rest of the casing must surely have a crack - or just be badly joined together.
For the garage to say, "they all do that", is a bit rich. If there is another Doblo sitting on the forecourt, look at it, point it out to the dealer. I bet you it won't be misted and it'll have been sitting out with no heat etc.

I had mine in today for its first 12,000 mile service. Having seen your post this afternoon, I checked an 05 and a 54 that were on sale there, NEITHER had any sort of misting visible.

Keep at 'em...

Well then

A further update :

I emailed fiat “central” concerning the two problems above, as a result :-

1. The headlights are to be replaced under warranty.
2. Fiat have arranged for a Technical Manager to come and look at the vehicle next Thursday concerning the engine whine .

Hopefully these issues will be resolved ………

Latest update:

The headlights have been changed…. By the dealer. Thank god… :)

Fiat Technical have been to the dealers have checked the engine noise which has been confirmed as a KNOWN problem. Therefore I would suggest to any prospective owners of a FIAT with a 1.3 multijet engine that they check for this whine + noise details in this posting, at present fiat do not have fix for this problem…

The symptoms are noise when changing UP the gears mostly in 2nd 3rd 4th.

Fiat have confirmed that it is a return feed to the fuel tank, the return fuel resonates down the pipes thus creating the noise…

Would be interested to know if any other 1.3 multijet owners have had such an experience.

At least you got your headlights sorted now, I just bought mine now finally :), a 1.9JTD though, and I'll be keeping an eye on them, I've seen a few misting up when I've been on my travels trying to find one.

Shame they don't have a fix yet for the feed, hopefully they'll come up with something soon. I'm guessing it's not causing the engine any damage? Which is the main thing. It is annoying when you've got something there though that you can't fix. Keep us updated :)

Further update... Been keeping an eye on the headlamps and at night as it gets dark the indicator/fog part of the lamp does mist up, as does one of the rear reverse lights. Will be contacting the garage who supplied it and getting them, hopefully, to replace the unit. It still has a years warranty on it so it should be no bones to them. Apart from that the little beast is fine :)
