Hi guys, I have had 3 Doblo cargos & they have all done pretty well, the 1 I have now is an 06 1.3 multijet, that is on 215k miles,I have replaced most of the ancilarys ie, Alternator, starter, battery, glow plugs etc, the engine itself is the best one of the 3 ive had, but now the turbo is scheeching like a banshee a mid revs, strange its quiet when over 40, there is no smoke or hesitation, just the nasty screech, I was wondering if there was any way of disabling the turbo, I know this would result in power loss, but I don't think it is worth spending any more money on the van, perhaps I could use it without the turbo for a few more months, then replace the van with a new one & keep the old 1 for spares, anyone know if the turbo can be disabled, so the engine would run half decently???
 
if you switch the turbo out on the 1.3, you'd be left with about 45 horsepower.

screeching is probably bearings.
 
Turbo's don't have bearings as such.

The "bearing" is a film of oil under pressure that the shaft spins in.

If the oil changes are infrequent, the oil breaks down and carbon deposits strat to build, further blocking the oil galleries and restricting the flow past the turbo shaft.

The sheer heat build up in a turbo causes most problems when the engine is switched off. The heat builds up so if the engine is raced up a hill then suddenly switched off, the shaft is still spinning at high speed, but no lubrication....

Anyway, the only way to conserve a turbo is frequent oil changes and NO revving up of the engine before shutting off.

So, the likely causes of the screeching are metal to metal (turbo fans against the body, meaning serious wear in the shaft) or perhaps something as simple as a split hose with air escaping under pressure.

See if you can see into the venturi of the turbo (compressor side as in not the exhaust driven section) and see if the fans are at all worn from catching the body. You will see obvious damage such as deep scratches or gouges and the movement of the shaft should be no more than 1mm. Much more than that will suggest the turbo is knackered.
