There's a long story to this which I'll spare you for now, but I'm away on holiday in Croma 150JTD. The rubber in the crankshaft pulley has disintegrated so it ended up sounding like a pneumatic drill and I've been towed to a garage that I don't know. The pulley did not come apart, the belt stayed on and has not done any damage. I've asked the garage to fit a new pulley (four ribe bolts I think?) and they want £273! This is apparently because they think it'll take an hour and a half to two hours. I thought with the right tools it should be a 15 minute job and the part should be around £80. Are they taking advantage of my misfortune or is there something I don't know about changing the crank pulley?

That sounds a bit high,
Looking a eLearn it's accessed through the wheel arch so very similar to the Marea. That one took me less than an hour including finding all my tools and it was the first time I'd done it. Work was at side of road with just a trolly jack, axle stand, socket set and Ribe bits. You could ask for an actual time used rather than a quote and then watch them do it. If you are near Cambridge I can bring some tools and we could DIY it

Thanks so much for replying and the kind offer of help. Unfortunately I'm in Yorkshire at the moment.

Going by the list of vehicles next to the spare part on the website, it's the same one as the Marea (I used to have one of those too) - it seems to be common to all 1.9 JTD engines and presumably all the Vauxhall and Saabs that use it too. The garage is a Vauxhall dealer so they have must have done it before - doesn't it have to come off to change the cam belt?

They haven't done the work yet so I'm going to give them a call and see why they think it will take them so long.

10 minute job, everything accessible with cordless impact gun.I done my brothers timing belt on his 150 jtd in 1.5hrs.I done the timing belt on my 2.4 in 4hrs.Havin a laugh mate.

Well, I phoned them and they assured me that if it took less time they would reduce the bill. I've now got the itemized bill and I feel I can name them. It took Ryedale Garages in Kirkbymoorside 18 minutes to confirm for themselves what the problem was after I'd already told them. It then took them two days to get the part and an hour and 7 minutes to fit it - with the head start that the belt was already removed when they got the car. They charged me £19.44 for four bolts, £145.73 for the pulley and £108.44 labour for a total bill of £273.71. I had to get the car back as I needed to get home to be at work tomorrow. I've paid up and driven away feeling like I've been mugged.

Hi as self-confessing tight wad I feel your pain! This bill is I am afraid typical of how we will have our wallets attacked when we fall into the clutches of large garages. The pulley is £50 on ebay and it comes with new bolts!. I have a set of tools in the car boot (though I will add my spline set to it) just in case of holiday drama and also and old net book with fiat ecu scan on it .The worst part of the pulley job is refitting the alternator drive belt back on and wrestling with the belt tensioner. If they charge all that for a pulley change the mind boggles what an alternator change would be!
