If they've been there some time the paint underneath may be a different shade due to different uv exposure.
If ever removing this sort of thing, it needs to be done with a hot steam cleaner. Cold peeling may remove lacquer from the paint.

Hot air gun followed buy gun metal cleaner works for me everytime!
