I just reviewed the dates of my previous posts, and the replacement rods lasted about 7 months. I then replaced them with new ones, plus the clips and so far they've been fine for 18 months (and still working and judder-free).

The problem is the combination of the socket facing upwards, plus the fact that the Wipex rods are heavier than the originals. Really Wipex should be bundling clips with them where the sockets face upwards. Gravity will beat friction in the end, and all your lovely grease will probably help it to fall off.

I have remembered about the rust issue on the clips though, from reading it. I will now hunt for some rustproof ones.

Edit: I've ordered four (2 pairs) of these for a tenner. Different design, diferent seller, zinc plated (yay!)...

I'll update this thread after I try fitting them.
Once again I bow to your abundant knowledge (and common sense) My Wipex linkage dropped off after 12 months. I have now ordered new stuff from Wipex plus the galvanised clips.
Nothing like belt and braces for the next lucky? owner.
I'll miss the old girl

Re: Croma Wiper Linkage Rods

Thanks for your (over) kind words!

I never got round to trying the plated ones, so I can't say for sure that they'd fit. The rusty ones did keep working until it was sold a few months ago, and I sold the clips on ebay a couple of weeks ago.

Good luck with it. I don't miss my Croma one bit. If anyone is looking for a very capable replacement then don't dismiss the Berlingo Multispace without a test drive - I'm still shocked at just how good it is. Zero posing points, but it's a huge load-lugger for the price of a Fiesta.

Re: Croma Wiper Linkage Rods

I did put some words and pictures about it somewhere. I cut a little notch into the rods with a hacksaw, in the right place for the clip's tab to clip into.

If you start from the beginning of this thread there are some photos somewhere showing the clips fitted. After this I cut the slots into the rods so they go on the other way, and the tabs slot into the rods.

Re: Croma Wiper Linkage Rods

Doofer thanks for getting back, however they don't seem to do those types of clips anymore :-( I have emailed the company, so hopefully they will get back to me with an answer.

Re: Croma Wiper Linkage Rods

Received an email from Ask the mechanic, off ebay, with regards to the linkage clip. They suggested item number 251752861634 on ebay. Not sure though as the Wipex replacement arms have wider ends.
Pleased I got a response .

Hi,

Our Fiat Clip fits the standard Croma linkage and the Wipex Punto linkage but I am not 100% sure about the Wipex Croma Linkage, but I would think it would.

Please search ASK THE MECHANIC FIAT WINDSCREEN WIPER LINKAGE MOTOR REPAIR CLIP or eBay item number: 251752861634

Re: Croma Wiper Linkage Rods

The "Ask the mechanic" ones are what I fitted, with the Wipex rods.

You can either fit them at 90 degrees to the rod, in which case you're relying on friction to keep them there (but they'll probably be fine), or you can do what I did and cut a small notch in the rod to make it much, much more secure...

Just push a clip over the end of each rod before fitting, draw a line where the tab rests against the bar, then remove it and cut into the bar by about 3-4mm. It will then be completely locked into place.

These lasted until I sold my Croma. But they did go rusty very quickly, which is why I would find a zinc-plated or stainless steel alternative.

Re: Croma Wiper Linkage Rods

The galvanised clips as per Doofers link fit perfectly on the Wipex rods without modification.
I am well pleased.

Re: Croma Wiper Linkage Rods

If you cut the notch into the rods as shown in my scribble diagram then it is physically impossible for them to ever come off, as you need to pull the clip out of the notch, against its spring, before it can be removed.

Without this you can put the clips on at a right angle to the rod, but you're then relying on friction - probably not a good idea, as it obviously twists in use.

Just put the clips on each rod end, make a pencil mark where they rest against the rods, then cut a notch with a hacksaw.

Re: Croma Wiper Linkage Rods

...and put white grease or silicone grease on every moving part before assembly.

Not standard grease, WD40 or oil as that would soften and degrade the plastic sockets.

Re: Croma Wiper Linkage Rods

Doofer, how do you remove the black trim that runs the width of the windscreen so that you can get access to the wiper motor and arms. Mine doesn't seem to want to come off.

Re: Croma Wiper Linkage Rods

Remove all clips, remove pollen filter lid then wiggle and pull up - try turning the clips a quarter turn then pulling out. If this doesn't work then pull the centre part out to unclip them.

Pull the trim off starting at one end and working across. It takes a bit of effort, as there's a lip that clips in along its full width. The rubber bits at the ends clip into slots in the pillars - I think, from memory, that they slide down to unclip.

Make sure everything's nice and clean, and that you get the slot into the groove at one end when refitting, then work across its full width to ensure it locates properly. Mine wasn't fitted right, due to a replacement windscreen company. I never got it to full clip flush against the glass again after their efforts.
