what have i broken...

right, ive tried to install a spare cd-rom into my PC....

everything seemed to go well, but ive turned it on, and it all goes normally til the boot XP boot screen (with the little loading bar, you know the one)

so it does that, but then the screen goes black and after that nothing....

screen stays on, fans keep going but nothing

i put it into safe mode and it all seems okay, i can find the new drive in My Computer and eject it in the menus, and it says its installed in the device manager

what could i have touched and fubar'd?

Cable Select is fine as long as mobo supports it (most modern ones do) and you set all drives on that IDE channel to Cable Select.

Have you tried firing the PC up with the new drive as the only CD-Rom?

yup, ive tired it with either drive, with a different cable, with the other IDE port, with each drive having its own cable and port, and they all fail to work when both are plugged in. And when its Cable Select it turns on after ages at the XP loading screen, but then neither drive works

unplug one and it comes on fine
