and with the standard fan small fan (which apparently the thermal compound is already pre applied to the cpu/fan) cpu temp is varying between 40ºc and 70ºC
40 when doing nothing
60 when setting things up alst night n that
69 when just loading up ut U

I'm gonna have a drive up tomorrow

yeah it does sound too hot, but a stock cooler at stock speeds should be able to cope. i ran my 1.86ghz C2D at 3.06ghz on the stock cooler quite happily.

is your case cooling setup properly?

I am going to use the Thermalright Ultra-120 as my CPU cooler, once I actually build my new PC.

Get the extreme version. I've got it on my e8400 :) Coupled with a Nexus 120mm fan it is for all intents and purposes silent. Won't get the worlds best OC but it's good enough.

Daz. What are you using to monitor the temps? Coretemp is good to use but take about 8-10 degrees celsius off the temps for an accurate reading :) 70 is way too high. Coretemp says I'm running @ 42-44 degrees at idle. But it's more like 30 degrees as the temp inside the house is 20 degrees c and coretemp over reads Penryns.

Oh yeah and I definitely reckon you haven't installed the heatsink properly. It's very easy to do with the 775 intel coolers. The Penryn's come with the crazy small intel coolers as well. They're only about half the height of the old coolers and the new ones aren't even copper cored so that tells you how cool these things should run.

Something wrong for sure then. I would take the cooler off and re-attach it. If that doesn't work then buy the 120 Extreme and if that doesn't sort it you have a faulty CPU. Beware though that it's hard to claim warranty on a CPU that's actually working even if it is running a bit hot.

it has only the preapplied thermal paste which i cudnt see

i want a bigger heat sink anyways

Couldn't see? It should be grey. The fact that you couldn't see it is worrying. *walks over to cupboard where e8400 cooler is kept and takes photo*

It should have looked like this when you put it on. Mine was one of the first in the UK so perhaps Intel have changed the pattern of the paste but I doubt it.

If it didn't have the paste on then something's a bit wrong.

well i am goign to buy a bigger heat sinq cause i dont trust the current one
tommorrow :)
www.cclonline.com shall be the place

i have some cpu and heat sink cleaner and a silk cloth

and i will buy some thermal paste

Why limit yourself to that place? There are plenty of good online shops in the UK :)

I think I ordered my 120 Extreme from Tekheads and they were quite good.

looked exacly like that
i thought them blobs was heat pipes or somthing just small ones

Well my guess is you didn't install the cooler properly. I wouldn't think there'd be 10 degrees difference between the stock cooler and mine with a low rpm fan on it. Something strange going on either way.

Heatpipes look like this.
