I’m sure most of you know the agro I’ve been having with my clutch over the last 3-4 months, well my cars at the garage again. I’ve told them to change the clutch again under warrantee and to change the selector fork as it’s the only bit left over that hasn’t been changed. They didn’t want to do it under warrantee again unless I put my standard 5 speed box back on, which they’ve scrapped.
Anyhow, I’ve had a phone call from them saying that the cars in bits and they want me to go up and have a look at all the bits before they refit everything, I wouldn’t be able to tell if anything was up or not, so, is there anyone in the Barnsley area who’s free around 3-4 today? Please, I can pick you up and drop you off but I really need someone else’s opinion before it gets rebuilt. (If we can’t find why it’s going through a clutch a week it’s going to have to be sold)
thanks

ok well I went down and had a look at the car in bits, they showed me the clutch that they took out and said its all fine, but theres some deep marks around the fingers where the bearing sits, the cars only been on the road for a week or two before it died again, should the fingers be marked so deeply already? (if the marks were in the paint they'd have gone through into the metal, maybe a finger nail deep)

The clutch was not going to last too long with that rate of wear.

Was the release fork free to rotate on its pivot and was the release bearing aligned with the axis of the clutch?

Was there any signs of wear on the release fork.

Did the release bearing rotate freely?

But if the cannot get it back together working then you need a new garage and the trading standards people.

Are you in the RAC or AA?

they said that the fork was ok, but I told them to change it I've been in touch with consumer direct and I'm putting it in writing that I want the work done at their expense at another garage. there still sayin that its because its got a 6 speed box on it, even tho everything that was hydraulic was changed to cable, by them. i couldn't see the release bearing anywhere, it maybe the skeptic in me but I'd think they didn't want me to see it.

but yep I'm in the RAC, I've seen more of their blokes than I have my other half. I've also still got the address as my parents house so its always a mile away if it dies on my driveway.

Well the release bearing might have seized that would explain wear in fingers of spring, and be unevenly worn...

I think they're hiding stuff from you rather deliberately. The old gearbox (your property, surely) which they (ahem) scrapped (sold?), the thrust bearing which they (probably) didn't change.........

You could always ask them to post here as to why a 6 speed gearbox would cause clutch problems...........

I'd be inclined to get trading standards and the police involved.........

Sorry the clutch spring fingers would have been evenly worn, but the release bearing might not have been free to align with the fingers, in which case it might have seized prematuraly, but will look real bad...

well I had a very snappy :tosser: on the phone earlier asking what i want them to do, seen as there not going to redo the work under warrente they said about meeting 50/50 so I told him what to do with that, put my car back together and I'll take it somewhere else and send the bill to them. when I get it to the other garage, I'll tell them to keep all the bits so I can get some pics.
