hi :D
wifes got a 900 mia constant squeeling from alt belt so changed that then alternator then water pump. belt was very tight before i changed it and oil was low i have slackened alt bolts so i can move it by hand then started car , no noise when slack lift alt to tension belt sqeels like a pig thinking worn crankshaft bearings as it the only thing left to check but have no technical data for replacement ie torque settings tightening order etc can anybody help (y)

Good point, you may just be unlucky if the replacement alternator wasn't a new one. It is a little unusual for the crank bearing to go. You say you were low on oil, is it leaking from around the seal.

hi spedo
theres no oil coming from round the seal but has oil leaking from somewhere my wifes mother had the car before her and was not very good at checking the oil and let it get very low alot. am going to strip bottom end down and have a look do you know if the cinquecento manuals have the right data for the engine its a 900 cos im not sure some say yes and others say no
thanks for your reply its appreciated

hi dont think its the alt bearings there is no play in them that i can feel
thanks though

Not sure, I have not had to make that sort of repair to the sei, but I am sure someone will be along with the correct info for you. In the mean time I will check my auto data and get back if I turn up anything.

Before you strip anything down, indulge me, put a couple of drops of redex on the inside of the belt run, just to see if you can eliminate any possible squeel from the pullies, could be a cheap job if all goes quiet.

hi spedo
ill give it a try anythings worth a try thanks will post how it goes

hi spedo
well gave it a whirl and what do ya know it worked or at least for now so will hold off on the major stuff. thanks for the great tip will remember that one have not had a squeel since but have on run in garage will take out in the cold and damp later thanks again

I have been using this method for many years, and will always, without exception work if it is just belt squeel. The redex cleans the belt, the chances are the noise will not come back.

If the squeel comes back its time to put a new belt on.

Really glad you saved yourself some back breaking work.

Isnt Redex a fuel additive and if so which type would you use? Petrol additive??

Hi

Redex to use is petrol injector cleaner, note this is kerosine (parraffin, heating/oil lamp material) - with red dye, when you fix the belt add a little to petrol when you fill the tank to remove residues from injectors.

Souse a rag and try and get all the working surfacet of the belt 'wet' it softens the working surface so it grips rather then squealing, tightening the belt is a sure way of destroying the alternator bearings, the alt is driven fast on a Sei.

The alternator bearings can have (some) axial play but should not have any radial, they are noisy when they fail, but when they fail the impellor (cooling fan) can grind into case of alternator that is real noisy... I'd remove and spin alternator before striippig engine, there is an alternator guide, needs a hack saw, real cunning.

Crank bearings wont squeal, never know that, the oil temp will rise more rapidly than normal and they tick and 'hammer', you wont miss the noise...

Change oil and filter regular.

P.S. as above the water pumls can squel , add water soluble ot to identfy this, or hydrulic brake fluid will work ok. If the squeal goes with this replace the pump next week end, or risk new head gasket...
