evening all,

got an 899 cinq (l reg) but have a few problems

-the gearbox is quite crunchy and loose, used to be able to get first by going into second and then first (lined it up) but now cannot get it at all and when putting it into what i think is first it pops out. all other gears are fine some clonk a bit. is it new gearbox time or an easy fix.

-have a knocking sound for the left rear wheel but not on the right. what could be the cause of this.

have you checked the following: clutch adjustment, gearbox oil

knocking from rear wheel, is this when going over bumps? it will probably be rear arm bushes, or shocker / bushes. It coudl also be a wheel bearing that has worn out.

i had this problem once, check your gear box mounts, see if the rubber has deteriated if so its probly them, have a look it might help



ahhh also if it is, to get the gearbox mounts replace by fiat it will cost you £235 so i would look for a local garage might be cheeper

What!!!!! There's one gearbox mount, it doesn't interfere with the gearchange, its a £20 or so part and takes 20 minutes to fit!

what about the other gearbox mount?? but hte same applies, very easy to fit and i carnt see it being that expensive

I call that one an engine mount, even though it bolts on the gearbox............

if not my dad has sourced a gearbox from a breakers yard for £60 and we are going to check to see how much it would cost to fit. is this a good price for a gearbox and what sort of labour charge would i be looking at to fit it (SE london)

Why not fit it yourself, it will only take a couple of hours.

London rates, don't know, but 'not cheap' springs to mind.

£60 is OK, providing its oil tight.

899 boxes have a habit of leaking at the shaft seals.

will definately check it over if i buy it. as for fitting how difficult is it was definately thinking about doing it but don't have a garage at the mo so it would have to be done on a driveway.

Do the checks first -- in reverse order -- daft to fit a gearbox if it's only the cable that needs adjusting!

Even if the clutch cable adjustment sorts it, I'd still want to check the gearbox oil.

Hi Dad here This is a bit of a strange one as its almost as if the tunnel is not wide enough so the gear leaver wont go over far enough I cannot think its a clutch issue as all the other gears are fine and the bite is quite high ,I cannot even get the gear with the engine off ! the box is also quiet but will check the oil level , the car has supposed to only have done 25000 miles so I cannot think is wear unless we been unlucky and its developed a fault ? will check the engine mounts tho incase its droped slightly ? to one side

Check that the outer cables are secured properly at the gear box end.

And then the inner end (the box under the remote).

Does sound as though it might be a selection issue.
