Replacing gearbox oil

So just contacted local fiat dealer to order some gearbox oil. He said they don't supply it. But have it on premises to do it for me (should of guessed). He did tell me that it's 75/80 oil needed. So first question is, which oil would be best?

I also asked him how much I need. He couldn't answer and after 15 minutes I couldn't wait anymore. So if someone can help me with how much is needed. I don't have access to the elearn or anything like that as I don't own a laptop (I'm ipad only). My cars the 120 t-jet with the m32 box.

Now I'm a complete novice and I'm useless with mechanics. But I've done my research into filling up the gearbox fluid. I could only find a tutorial from a VXR. This said It needed to remove battery and plate, and passenger front wheel to do it. Is this the same for the bravo? Any hints and tips would be great. I want to protect the M32 box as much as possible. And have already encountered a slight whirring noise already. I'd like to nip it in the bud so to speak. Thanks

Re: Replacing gearbox oil

According to Fiat's eLEARN the 1.4 16v TJet uses Tutela Car Technyx oil
grade SAE 75W-85, API GL4 Plus - Fiat 9.55550. Quantity is shown as 1.58 kgs.

So, Brand of oil : Tutela
Type : Car Technyx
Grade : SAE 75W-85
Standard : API GL4 Plus
Quantity : 1.58 kg Oil is usually sold per litre or 0.5 litre(500ml)
( 1 litre of oil weighs approx. 1 kg, afaik)

You would need to buy a good quality gear oil of 75w85 viscosity, meeting API GL4 Plus standard, quantity approx 3-4 x 500ml bottles, i.e. 3 bottles might fill it or you might need to start on a 4th bottle)

Good luck with your first? gearbox oil change!

Al.

Re: Replacing gearbox oil

If the box has a slight whine then I would get the bearings done now while its a relatively cheap fix, leaving it will only cost more in the long run. The noise you can hear now will be the pinion bearings failing, if not attended to quickly then fifth and sixth gears will become damaged, this runs the risk of punching a hole in the gearbox end case and scrapping it off.

It has actually stopped mate, come to think of it I may of jumped the gun. It could of been road noise for all I know, but now that I've had the scare I'm gonna protect it as best as I can.

Re: Replacing gearbox oil

I'm glad its stopped for you, the alternative is horrendous!

I was convinced mine wasn't the usual fifth and sixth gear bearings failing as it was doing it (very faintly) all the time, of course I'd not realised the gears turn all the time off the diff in this box whether they as meshed in drive or not.
