I've just seen my old B appear on Autotrader in the past couple of days at an absolutely outrageous price.

I don't begrudge the dealer making a profit, but not this much. If anyone is thinking of getting a Barchetta via Autotrader (you probably all already have one though if you're on here), I can give you the low down on the car .. caveat emptor and all that.

Might as well add the details here:

Good points

Owned by me for 8 years - garaged all that time.
Only 46K miles (13K dry ones)
MOT 'till Feb 10 (and full MOT history)
Hood and rear screen in good condition (but not new as described in ad)
Alloys (scuffed nearside) instead of steelies
Good tread on tyres
Variator and cambelt / tensioner done at 34K miles.

Bad points

No red key
No FSH - needs a service.
Tyres are 8 years old
Exhaust centre section is marginal and needs replacing
Hood becoming to come away at corner seals, and has the classic "pinch" marks at the top.
Driver window channel rubber needs replacing
Driver window needs adjusting up a couple of mm to stop water ingress
Trip meter doesn't reset
Usual dents scratches, stone chips for a 13 year old car
Original Grunding radio is pants
Wipers don't return to park position
Looks like it's had paintwork to the offside front wing
Driver door makes an embarassing clacking noise when you open the door (door stay is catching)
Interior sill covers scuffed, one has slight crack, and Maggiora badge missing from one side
Rear brake squeal and howls when you brake while reversing
Interior light doesn't latch on
Front number plate cracked
Reverse sometimes difficult to engage
Slight oil drip from sump plug area .. probably needs a new copper washer.


I know some of the bad points can be fixed if you look at some of the technical guides on the Barchetta Club UK website.

Doesn't sound terminal..roof needs doing tho before it gets any worse and water gets under the floor. Nothing else that money & TLC won't solve.

Dealers have a loopy idea of B prices. One dealer here in Dublin has an undriven base Mk2 (steel wheels, cloth, no aircon). Advertised either as a 'modern classic' or brand new 09..and he wants €30k (£26,500 for it)..I walked out laughing like a drain..man was not impressed.

I agree .. none of it terminal, but the price of the car doesn't reflect that and I'm worried some unsuspecting punter will have paid over the odds for it. I would pay around £2500.

I would consider a B again, but it would have to be one of the very last in Elisir Blue, or failing that a good early one that I would strip down and rebuild. I quite fancied once the idea of turning it into the coupe version .. but that would have been prohibitive ... but looks fab ... ... see piccies below.

Hardtop turns it into a swoopy little coupe and the nearest thing to the prototype above..My next project is a full re-spray to fix 50k of road dings & damage followed by complete removal of the hood / frame from inside. Should give a lot more space and some weight.

What's the point of this thread? Anyone who is looking to buy the car would notice the defects (particularly if they use this forum), should have an idea of what it's worth and make a decision accordingly. Almost all of the defects you mention are easily visible and, who knows, some of them could have been sorted by the dealer.

A very odd comment. Who is to decide how much profit they should make. They may be trying it on with the price to see what happens, more likely it's just at book price (I haven't looked so unless it's up for £10k I doubt it's an "absolutely outrageous price"), it may sit unsold for six months and they might end up selling it effectively at a loss or they might find a buyer who wants most of the work done to complete the sale. You have no idea what profit they will end up making - is it just because they didn't offer you much for it?

When I bought my B, I agreed a price with the seller. it was slightly more than I wanted to pay and, a lot less than what he wanted. However, I drove off in the car and he walked off with the cash... I was happy and he was too. Things are only worth what someone is willing to pay.

Agreed. It's only business. And the car is only worth what someone is prepaired to pay for it. That's all anything is worth, the advertised price is only a guide, long gone are the days in which we pay over the odds for things like houses etc.

If the garage sells it for ££££'s over then good on them. It's the buyers fault. Caveat Emptor, also remember the garage has to put a legal 3mths warranty on it, so these things do add to the cost, dealers always ask more because the consumer has more rights. Selling to the dealler like you did means they have the gamble. We can all bodge things for a few hours. But the garage has to deal with this for the new buyer.
I have had a look on Auto Trader and E-Bay, there are a few cars going for a good price, then it is summer and these go up in the summer.
