Re: GT for sale

I had to do the first bit of welding on mine year before last (94 Cabrio). It was a repair about the size of a 50p piece on the floor above a reinforcing section. I cut out the rot and welded in new metal.

Never have a patch welded over the rot for the sake of an MOT, it will continue to rot hidden behind the patch and be more complicated to repair in future. I find it no more difficult to cut out the rot first, apply weld-through primer and then weld in the repair. Do the job properly and do it only once!

sounds about right, that and them that have lived outside all their lives and been used daily. 99.9% of owners, even the anal ones that love their car and clean it all the time tend not to clean underneath. I mean i don't blame them, its a right hassle, but it does make a huge difference. My little suzuki has lived outside its whole life, been used through winters and seen plenty of salty crap. But i clean it regularly underneath with a right angled nozzle on my jetwash, net result is its proper clean and tidy under there, even the mot tester commented that it looked brand new underneath compared to cars coming in for their first ever mot at 3 years old, i was pretty proud of that. Shame I can't say same about our panda 100hp, its clean but it looks far from new under there. But i shall fix that

Best thing to do if you have a genuinely rot free one is clean it all up and seal the underneath. Its the floors that go on them the worst. When I sold mine about 5 years ago it was solid - had a little bit of surface rust starting to show but nothing at all bad, 5 years later and there was a big hole in the floor. This has been fixed now but i have not seen the repair.
Yes my mate been telling me to do it for years now, next time it's in garage I will tell them to do it while on the ramp as I'm presuming it's not easy on axle stands.
