Won't a non working speedo be a fail?

In theory yes. Section 6.7 states that it has to be fitted(!), the condition checked, and that it could be illuminated. Never knew that last one!! If it's clearly inoperative it fails. In practice it wouldn't be obvious so it passes - I had one go through several Mot's with it broken - I had tried to fix it each time but just kept dying - just used a Satnav instead though the car hardly ever worked anyway.....

By the way it's already failed on 1.3 if it's got a broken fog light!

No its not, doesn't have to clock on the ODO, just give a speed reading.

You sure? It is effectively clocking a vehicle and MOT testers always take down the mileage of the car. If it comes back year to year with the same mileage then they've got to spot that surely!

I dunno, not going to research it myself. I know my cavalier (free car before anyone asks why the hell I have one!!) went through it's MOT with no working odometer with no problems but the speedo worked fine fortunately which certainly backs up what your saying. It had done enough miles (200k +) to wear out the gears of the instrument panel but engine still soldiers on!!

Its only illegal to clock a vehicle if you sell it as being genuine mileage. Mileage on the car is irrelevant to the MOT, I've also heard, but not sure if it's true, that if you ask for it not t be recorded they won't record the mileage.

A friends defender has pass the last 6 MOTs with between 100000 and 100009 miles as only the last number changed on his ODO. Never been an issue.

my mum has an old mk 3 fiesta si the speedo packed up about 3 years ago and fixing it would be more than the value of the car so she decided to run it into the ground and just buy a new car later but to this day its still in use the dam thing wont die! passed every mot since with no issue at all... well not speedo related ones any way lol she just uses the sat nav on her phone as a speedo
