General emissions

General emissions

A colleague sent this to me earlier. Apart from it being the most tedious commentary that I have had to wade through for a while, it makes some interesting claims. I wonder what the 1.4 will be?

And you can't blame the car companies. They are being forced to do the near impossible at the moment, so of course they are going to design cars that pass tests, as opposed to actually lower emissions. It's what our test everything that moves lifestyle is built on at the moment - for example teachers are now always teaching kids to pass tests as opposed to survive in this thing called the real world!

I agree that manufacturers are being squeezed from all sides, and you can't blame them for designing to pass the tests.
I followed the link to the Equa website and there is a huge amount of data there. I had a quick look at the fuel consumption figures for our cars. The 500X 1.4 petrol was just over 33mpg, the Suzuki S-Cross 1.6 petrol was just over 42mpg. Both figures tally with what we get in our local driving, relatively short journeys but not sitting in queues much. On a long run, our Fiat does over 40, the Suzuki over 50.
Interestingly, the Honest John Real mpg for the Fiat is almost identical to the Equa figure. For the Suzuki, the HJ feedback is a few mpg better.
All in all, for mpg the Equa site seems to give a good indication of what owners can expect in less than ideal conditions. I haven't waded through the emissions stuff yet!
