Technical Problem with DLR lights

My daughters 500 pop 1.2l has the warning light on. Clearly both her DLR bulbs have gone. The DLRs are programmed to come on during normal use. One thing I noticed was that the offside parking light comes on instead of both DLRs. Does that suggest a wiring fault, or is this supposed to happen when a DLR buld fails?

No replace them, the fact the side light comes on may suggest the wires attached to the bulb itself are touching shorting the drl and side circuits together? Having been originally against drl's I can now see their benefit, £6.50 for two bulbs and 30 mins ?

I have to remove a front wheel to allow my fingers and hands into the hole to replace a DRL.

Get the jack out, jack up the car, remove a wheel, do the replacement, refit the wheel, lower the car, put everything away.
Add to that, the covers fall out and they cost a tenner a time, so after loosing a couple, I had mine tie-wrapped in place.

I'd say 30mins is pushing it, but I've done six of these DRLs in three years, so I'm well-versed in the job. If it was me for the first time, I'd allow and hour ................. and have then a beer afterwards.

Yup, which is exactly what we did when we had our 500's, just disabled them in the menu. The DRL's worked when we bought the cars and they worked when we sold them, absolutely no replacements required. :devil:

The thing you have to ask yourself in the first place is, just why did Fiat put an option in the menu to disable what is allegedly supposed to be an important safety feature?......

I've been driving professionally now for a few years, it's my daily job. I'm not fussed one way or the other whether or not the vehicle I'm driving happens to be fitted with them or not, they aren't my vehicles. Do I feel particularly disadvantaged from a safety perspective when the vehicle I'm driving doesn't have them fitted? of course not.

My Saab 9-3 isn't fitted with them and I'm not going to spend £200 getting them retro-fitted professionally. Our i10, that has DRL's and you can't switch them off. Do we feel safer in our i10 with DRL's illuminated? Nope!

Anyway, we've been round the houses on this particular argument in several DRL threads and no one will be able to change my mind on what I think of them.

I'd also like to add, daily, frequently, I see plenty of Fiat 500's without DRL's illuminated under normal running conditions. I can only assume they've either been disabled, or the lamps have failed and the owners cannot be bothered to replace them.

Oh and just for you Mick, remember, bulbs grow, lamps glow! :devil:

I have them on, and can't turn them off in our Yaris.
I had them on in the 500TA before too, but could turn them off.

If we lived in a flat open area, I wouldn't consider having them, but plunging into deeply wooded valleys round here, they seem a good idea to me.

i do a lot of cycling, but somehow I don't feel the need for lights on during the day, so perhaps I'm applying dual standards here?

Could it be an "arms race"?
If we all had DRLs on all the time, maybe it becomes a little pointless?

BTW, the Yaris DRLs go off when you stop and set the handbrake.
The Fiat500 doesn't do that!

Their functioning seems to vary between manufacturers. The Megane we had (2010 model) let you turn them off, the Suzuki we have now doesn't. On the 500, the DRLs switch off when you turn the lights on, and the 5w "sidelights" turn on, along with the headlamps. On the Suzuki, there is a position between Off and Headlamps which leaves the DRLs on, and switches on the tail and other lamps. With the headlamps on, the DRLs dim to "sidelight" brightness with a 5W filament.
Interestingly, the 500X I have now has single filament DRL lamps, which dim when the headlights are on, or when the adjacent indicator is in action. I can't remember if you can turn them off as I prefer them to be on anyway.
