Servicing plans and exended warranties can work out great value for those people that cover average/above average miles per annum or those who intend keeping their cars for a very long time.

In the case of our situation (my Wife's TA), the car will barely cover 6k per annum and we are unlikely to keep the vehicle for more than 3 years (we kept the last POP for 2 years 3 months) before trading it in and getting another. A very different situation to my own vehicle which I know I will be keeping for years but which I would never buy any extended warranty on anyway.

I was indeed just offered a monthly service plan on our TA when it went in for its dealer service this week, for £15 a month, but I know in our situation, it just would not have been worth the money in the long run. At the annual mileage we cover, we can get away with low mileage servicing to a point, nothwithstanding the stuff that Fiat insist on to stay within warranty framework. I estimate in the three years we'll own the vehicle, it will barely cover 18k.

Concerning having the vehicle serviced outside of the dealer network, well yes, if you are packing an extended warranty through the dealership network and you choose to have an independent garage service the car, you do need to be quite careful. The garage we used last year for the 2nd service on our old POP was an independent Fiat specialist (a very good one I might add!). He used genuine Fiat serivce parts and complied with the service schedule to include a brake fluid change and he supplied us with fully documented service sheet paperwork. We sold the car on back through Fiat with no issues. We would have been quite happy to have the Fiat dealership network do the service on the last car, but every dealer I spoke to within a reasonable travelling distance, just quoted stupid money and so the indie won it on both price and reputation.

I'm not adverse to travelling either when it comes to buying cars or servicing them, but it is interesting to see from some of the other posters that there are Fiat dealership network garages that offer some seemingly excellent fixed priced servicing deals out there. Picadilly Fiat at Wakefield for instance, is an hour travelling distance for me and I would be happy to travel that far for a second year service if the price was right. We'll see next year.

As for London, someone will have to tell me where that is...I've heard of it, capital city of somewhere? :p
