I have just bought a brand new 500 Lounge Twin Air. I absolutely love it but I'm having a few problems with the range data. I don't know if I'm using it incorrectly or if perhaps it's faulty. I'll give you an example.

Started journey from home - the mileage showing on 'range' was 170.

Travelled a distance of 13 miles - the mileage showing on 'range' was 280.

Travelled a further 8 miles - the mileage showing on 'range' was 217.

How can you travel 13 miles and have another 110 miles in the tank than when you started. Then how can you travel another 8 miles and lose 63 miles.

It now means I have no confidence in using this reading so I fill up when the yellow light comes on if not before. I wonder if anyone can shed some light on this for me please.

When you first start off the car will be consuming more fuel (like having the choke on in an old car)
Once warmed up the economy improves hence the rise in the range, should you then be using more fuel, ie pulling away or going up a hill the MPG srops and so does the range.
The further you drive on the tank the less the fluctuation you will see.

My advice? dont even bother looking at the range data. just keep on driving until the flash warning comes out saying 'fuel low' with a beep. at this stage you have around 30 miles left so check out a filling station. I would assume that in the UK there is always a filling station within 30 miles of you! At this stage fill her up. Life couldnt be easier.

Hi, thanks for that.

It still seems strange to me though. My son owns a Kia Picanto with a similar function. He fills his car with petrol and the range gauge increases to show this. The range then reduces as he drives and uses fuel. His shows a very minor fluctuation nothing like the amount mine does.

If you're driving around town (or just 30/40 speeds) you will get a lower range than if you're driving at speed limit on an A or Motorway road. TBH I only ever check on the range if I know I'm getting low on fuel - I tend to have the average MPG setting toggled on screen most of the time.

instant consumption please! need to know how heavy that right foot is!

Hi
Range will vary all the time depending on how you have been driving over the past few miles and other variables.

This is dependent on road surface/road inclination(flat or hills)/throttle percentage/engine temperature/air temperature, wind speed and vehicle speed.

All these variables change over every few miles- unless you are on a completely flat straight motorway at an absolute constant throttle setting/speed and with ambient temperatures/air pressure and wind speed constant.

So it is no surprise that this reading alters constantly!

You may want to try driving with a more even throttle amount(smaller pedal push) and correct gear usage- this may reduce the amount of variation in your range?
Hope this helps:)
