General Which winter tyres are people going for

Arorat you sure you need winter tires in London right now? From what i see the temp hasnt fallen below 7c yet and we are already mid november! If i remember correctly, in 2 years of driving in london i felt i only needed the winter tires once!

As usual you've missed the point by a mile :)

The winters in recent times (the last two years excepted) have been exceptionally mild and snowless. This by all accounts is not typical of the UK. You probably lived here for 2 years when snow was uncommonly rare. This is not what British winters are usually like.

At the very worst the people who've bought winter tyres this year will have another set of tyres which will be sharing the tyre wear duties. Which means that they'll just be waiting longer to wear out their summer and winter tyres than if they just had one set of tyres. One point which I make all the time and which gets constantly ignored for some reason, is that summer tyres wear QUICKER than winter tyres when it's cold. So buy buying winter tyres you may actually be better off financially.

It's also about being prepared for what may happen. The last two winters HAVE been harsh at times and have resulted in less than ideal driving conditions. Sure the conditions have been rather unwintry so far. But last year was quite the same and I remember wondering whether I'd put my tyres on a week or two early and then it all started to kick off and I was laughing...... Some people at work had to

Worst case - People have spent a bit more money now, but it'll pay off because it'll just be longer till they need to put another set of tyres on the car.
Best case - it snows heavily = WIN

You do know of course that it will be YOUR fault if it isn't very cold this winter. As long as you can deal with that then all's fine and dandy...;)

The weather we're seeing here at the mo is really, really exceptional. The nighttime temperatures are the weirdest ones as they are still up around 12 to 13 degrees. It's nearly the middle of November for crying out loud!

At the end of the day, I'm happy with making the changeover as it gives us that extra piece of mind moving towards the festive season (and with the pending newborn too, 3 days late now!). We are going to be on the roads one way or the other, and as we are now living out in the sticks it is a no-brainer for me.

Too right. Plus no one ever got stuck in warm weather and had to deliver their own child because they had winter tyres on ;)

I took the plunge (picture taken on the same day beside the scrappie) & got a set of steel rims last Saturday. They were from a Stilo 15inch with a 37 offset and a PCD of 4 x 98. Will fit the 500, A500 & supposedly should be ok on a Mito as well.
Anyway I couldn't negotiate the mean looking character down on his price and conceded to paying him €120 for the set. It would have been cheaper to have bought them off mytyres since I could have got a receipt and run them off against tax. Lesson no. 1 learned.
Going out that night the OH wasn't too impressed with the idea of a set of "bad ass" rims (quote from SilconS) on the funk baby and ended up in a not so happy conversation of yes I should have bought alloys instead and yes I will get a set of hub caps. Lesson 2 - think before you buy.
I now know they will never end up on the Mito ! Lesson no. 3

You're gonna need more than 11mm of tread to deal with the surface water in the first pic...

Those tyres are scrap and I get the impresson that some boy racer had them (Yokos & the outside wear on 2 of the tyres)
I was thinking of getting 15 x 175/55 (poor selection & I will need a little letter to the insurance heads) as opposed to 15 x 185/55 although I would need to check if the slightly skinner tyres with fit on 6J width since the 165/175 is 5.5J.
I remember someone saying that cheap winter tyres are 10 times better than summer tyres. I hope that it doesn't tempt me to opt for £60 tyres in that size.

don't get hubcaps just spray them dayglow pfink, she will love them

you can stick the non winter tyres off them on ebay and get a bit of money back

Since shop4parts don't do a 15 inch hub cap for a 500 I might be off the hook.;)
If anyone wants Yoho 195/65 x 15 for free (unlkely in the 500 section !) - 2 of them might be barely ok - they're welcome to PM me - collection in Dublin.

Go for the best you can reasonably afford.

Conti's seem to be the best at the moment and Dunlop's and Goodyear's are good too and of course Vredestein's aren't to be sneezed at either.

There are some rumblings of cold weather towards the end of this month. Of course being 2 weeks off anything could happen but you don't want your winter tyres to arrive just as the snow is melting!

7c here tonight, the winter tyres are starting to feel at home.

where is that? i'm still going out without a coat here
I am in Maidenhead in Berkshire

Do you feel them hardening up a little bit and being a little bit more "normal"? :) Just wait till it snows and you'll be rather surprised at the grip

I had only gone 5 miles and it was in traffic so I did not get to test them out properly.

Wish my van ones would harden up, im running the max rated pressure for the tyre and they still look flat :(
I think kwikfit put the wrong rating on :(
