Dear me. It always amuses me when certain rogue males insist on measuring other drivers' manhood (or wimpiness) by whether or not they can use a handbrake. Actually, there is nothing wimpy about the Hill Holder, because -
  • When making an uphill traffic light getaway with a Fiesta ST alongside
  • You are ready to burn in first gear with Hill Holder ON (and ASR OFF)
  • The lights go green
  • And while the ST driver is mucking about getting his handbrake off
  • You have mashed the gas pedal to the carpet and have gained a car's length already
  • With your left hand on the gearlever ready for the change to second (not coming back from the handbrake)
At great personal risk, I have tested this out for you (in the interests of science only, of course) as you can probably tell :)

i don't see why your so bothered to be honest, some people prefer to use the cars brakes instead of the handbrake, when your in traffic it gets a bit frustrating sticking the hb on/off.

whats wrong with the fragrance dispenser anyway? i'm not being funny but we've bought a 500, its not exactly the most manly car is it :rolleyes:
Don't worry, I'm not bothered - just poking a bit of harmless banter. In any case, I rarely drive it, as it's mainly my wife's car (and she also prefers to control a car mechanically). ;)
 
I was really only asking how it worked to make sure ours is working i always use the handbrake. We got the fragrance grey plastic container sat near the usb with ours, no fragrance with it, does that come as standard the plastic thing?
 
still don't think this hill hold is working, as you said have it in first with footbarake on it was a slight downhill took my foot off the brake and the car rolls straightaway but as i said it was a very slight hill!
 
Taken directly from the Technician's manual-

"The HHC function (Hill Holder Control) is designed to assist the driver during departures in forward gears or reverse when the gradient of the road is more than 2%.

The function is incorporated into the ESP system and is automatically activated under the following conditions:

uphill: vehicle stationary on a road with a gradient of more than 2%, engine on, clutch and brake pedals pressed and gearbox in neutral or gear other than reverse engaged;

downhill: vehicle stationary on a road with a gradient of more than 2%, engine on, clutch and brake pedals pressed and reverse gear engaged.

During take off the ESP system control unit maintains the braking pressure at the wheels until the engine torque required for departure is reached or for a maximum of 2 seconds, allowing your right foot to be moved easily from the brake pedal to the accelerator.

When 2 seconds have elapsed, without any departure having taken place, the system is automatically deactivated, gradually releasing the braking pressure. During this release stage it is possible to hear a typical mechanical brake release noise, indicating the imminent move of the car."

thanks for that i just need to find a decent hill to try it, but i don't understand the manual saying downhill with reverse engaged! surely it should be a forward gear :eek:

No its intended to help u when reversing up a hill-theres not much difficulty getting the biting point when setting off down hill.

Should be usefull on my drive as its very steep. Having it work when reversing is an added bonus I was expecting to have to face uphill to activate it- nice added bonus to the system. (y)
 
For some reason i have Hill Hold not avalibe ..... also i have the yellow warning light come on,

Any other messages? I had the same when one of the sensors packed up but mine also said ASR not available. A fault code should be stored so that the tech can determine which one.

i wish you could turn it off

all it does is wear the clutch out and make your hill starts slower :bang:

Rob, how does the brakes holding on for two seconds to stop the car rolling backwards affect the clutch?

Unless you are trying to get away PDQ before the brakes release.

because it is like trying to pull off with the handbrake on for 2 seconds

a driver would time the release of the handbrake with the biting point on the clutch, the stoopid electronics cannot do this (n)

You have misunderstood how the hill holder works.

Although it will hold the brakes on for a period of up to two seconds, as soon as it senses sufficient torque to move off, the brakes are completely released. If the release cycle took a full 2 seconds you would hardly be making a quick getaway!
If anything, the hill holder will aid clutch life because it does a much better job of releasing the brakes than the driver.
