Ok this comes from timing chain, i don't know why the chain has those little (whatever you call them) installed in chain links and i am not sure if they come from my chain or it is just a left over from previous chain although i don't think so. There is a small hole next to the oil pump from where i can inspect the chain and see if it is missing from this one. In a case it is missing what do you think i should do? Shall i open the chain cover and replace the chain?:bang:

Thomas, check the chain - it's not a long job and if you have a broken link it may fail completely at speed and wreck the cam sprocket, oil pump and the cam.:eek::eek: It's not worth the chance, I would open it up and look. (y)(y)

Ian.

Completely agree with Ian---check the timing-chain. If the link HAS come off the chain currently, change it immediately, but you MUST change it----the ramifications of the chain breaking are expensive!.

What I meant to say was:---if the link has come of the chain currently fitted, CHECK it immediately, but you MUST change it.
Sorry about that, but my brain cell and my fingers were not working at the same speed---but then I do have 10 fingers and only 1 brain cell!

Ok guys i will open the chain cover to see whats inside, can you tell me what are those little links are? I have seen chains without those special links.
Thomas

Those links are described as chain tensioners but I don't know how they work,?
.... centrifugal force maybe???

Yep - the little levers are thrown outward during normal operation and act as dynamic tensioners. Most engines have either a mechanical spring loaded tensioner or a hydraulic one and their chains do not need these little levers.

I've got to echo everyone else - if you've found a bit of the chain in the sump, the whole chain needs to be changed as I think that there is a fair bit of valve overlap (interference) in these engines and a snapped chain will ruin your engine completely.

Ok just opened the chain cover. Chain and spoket are brand new around 1500 km I have done. Little link is missing but there is no damage to the chain link itself. Links are pressed togeather and then those links are also pressed there. I guess this one just failed but I don't see any other damage or suspect link. What do you think now. I think that it can stay as is, ofcourse I will consider your opinion. I also tried to remove another link and it's not that hard, are we talking about a low quality chain or it is normal?

I wouldn’t risk it personally. If bits are falling off it, who’s to say it not going to lose a link totally? For the sake of peace of mind and the cost of a new chain I would replace it.

I thought about it and it's really nothing to replace it now. Besides i can find it locally so tomorrow I'll go and buy a new set.

Hey guys what’s up I just registered as a user on here and I must say I’m glad I did it’s wonderful to be amongst such professional enthusiast and know that we are all in good hands together to support one another for info parts or whatever the heck we want to talk about I wish yous all joy and happiness and peace

Thomas, trust me - you have made the correct decision with the chain. (y)(y) Sometimes the potential risk is just not worth it - the chain may have not broken, but then again maybe it would, for the cost of the chain against the cost of a rebuild it's an easy decision (y)(y)(y)
Ian.

Ok job is done, new chain is not that lose as the one I removed which had only 1500km. I hope this one last longer.

Occasionally, just occasionally, sons do have their uses----well done for sorting it out Thomas---glad you wisely decided to renew the chain.
