The breather hose on my 100HP is cracking, so I'm replacing it (at a cost of £36, plus some change )

(This is the one from the rocker cover to the air filter -> throttle body hose, with a thin section going off to the throttle body - pictured on top of the battery).

When it cracked on my old Cinquecento Sporting I found the wire filter full of gunk so I removed it and sprayed it with brake cleaner before refitting everything.

On the Panda, it's firmly stuck. I don't know if it's meant to be. Should it unscrew, or...? Help!

I don't want to spray brake cleaner in to the top of the engine, and ideally I don't want to leave the filter filthy.

Of course, as soon as I spend ages carefully trying and then post I manage to shift it.

Lots of twisting and wiggling, and a lack of grime would have helped, too... something to add to the yearly service alongside the oil and filter, methinks.

This is a must examination. A few years back, I had a 1974 vw bay window pick up, which kept leaking oil. I took the engine off 3 times to discover what was the cause. It leaked behind the crankshaft pulley, push rod tubes, up through the carburettor................... it ran the engine dry!!!
Then by chance I looked at the air breather gauze. It was totally blocked up. Gave it a clean, the engine never went better. It can be the reason why you see leaks at the oil sump, behind crankshaft pulley and other locations. As been suggested, look at it at every oil change, or if you start getting oil leaks. A valuable lesson to be learnt.

John.
