Hi Guys,

I've seen a few people have problems with the Low Oil Pressure Warning, with myself I have to put about 2Litres of oil in my car every month, and gradually the Warning comes on more & more, it only seems to be when I turn though which is a bit weird, but as times goes on throughout the month it gets worse and worse, I've had it checked and no oil leak can be found anywhere.

Any ideas anyone?

If there are no oil leaks and the oil level is getting lower with use then the most obvious answer is that the engine is burning oil.

Have you noticed blue smoke when starting first thing?

Is there a blue smoke haze continually being emitted from the exhaust when driving?

When then engine is on over-run do you get a significant amount of blue smoke when you apply throttle?

If the answer to any of the above is yes then the engine is using oil and requires looking at quickly because it will only get worse.

I nearly forgot to mention that the reason the oil warning light is being activated when cornering is because the oil is surging in the sump and with the level being low the oil pickup is drawing air rather than oil, hence no oil pressure and oil warning light, this will only exacerbate the problem you have.

I think this low oil pressure warning is spurious. I've had it happen (vary rarely, about two occasions only) when manoeuvering at very low speed on full lock (so nothing to do with oil surge). Must be something to do with the strain on the electric motor in the steering sytem spiking a false reading somewhere in the ECU software.

My suggestion - don't worry about it, but just continue to keep your oil level under regular check, which you're doing anyway by the sound of it...

Did you all read this thoroughly?

my car was serviced 2000 miles ago and i had to put 2 litres of oil in it on sunday, it was only done 6 weeks ago, no smoke, no oil leaks, engine is dry, and it drives fine. maybe its a batch of 1.8s that burn oil rapidly or maybe its because the engine has had it, i dont no im not a mechanic but its using alot more than it should, especially for a normally aspirated engine.

Thanks for the replies guys its much appreciated.

Apart from this my car runs as it should do, no smoke coming from anywhere or anything.

Some early FIRE engines used a lot of oil with no apparent tell tale signals such as blue exhaust smoke

Only if they're knackered!

2litres in a month means nothing. Mileage people! If your doing 6k a month then 2litres is nothing!

As a guide my 1.4 used 300ml of oil every 1000miles, and this is about normal IMO.

Hello everybody,

I have 1.8 16v Stilo Dynamic and I have excessive oil consumption too - 1l per 500/600km engine is clean, almost like new.. No smoke signals during startup and ride...

the low oil pressure warning occured only twice, when I had too brake rapidly. From that time I try to have the oil level on the MAX mark on the dip stick. The engine had 101000km on the clock and big repair to solve was performed on 98000...

I tried to solve it last summer. However without succes so I have "spare" block from Barchetta with Barchetta pistons.

The repair:
I disassembled the engine, took the head to specialists where it get the best care (new sealings, checked valves and guides, mildly "ported" to correct manufacturing imperfections and rounded valve seats and valves for best airflow, new hydro-lifters vere also putted in because of erosion on contact surface wich could damage camshafts in future.. erosion probably caused by low grade quality oil wich also caused piston ring and cylinder bore wear)

So by this step I ´ve eliminated the head from the list, but the more was found in the block.

Piston ring were badly worn - almost 1mm gaps in the lock and step on second ring disappeared too, the cylinder wals were glazed with smal step in TDC and BDC with honing wisible on surfaces where ring dont go - difference in diameter was 0,015mm so nothing unusual... I´ve deglazed the cylinders (steps dissapered), tried tu put in new ring -with gap of 0,3-0,35mm (acc to workoshop manual) wich should improve the oil consumption rapidly and assembled the engine with hope of better oil consumption...(n)

After some hunderts km of bedding in, the engine felt and sound like new, but after check of oil leve I was dissapointed - oil consumption remains...

I checked the spark plug to find weter its from head or block - all plugs vere badly foulded and pistons were wet - conclusion head is OK, problem is in block...

so I ve obtained barchetta block with pistons - wich are older desing, heavier and with thicker piston rings (1,5/1,5/3mm instead of 1,2/1,5/2mm)..

Interesting is that many problems with oil consumption comes with new engines with thinner piston rings and lenghtened oil change intervals - on 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.4 5cyl engines engines with thicker rings are almost OK..http://hno3.rajce.idnes.cz/stilo_motor/#

my low oil pressure light came on the suddenly the engine just cut out  and now wont start. Engine made a weird noise when slowing down. Oil level was fine, just under the max line. Away back to Fiat for a check up.

Anyone any ideas before I get a huge bill???:mad::mad:

Ta much

Cheers for the welcome

Cam belt was "supposedly" changed and serviced before we got the car, but they will say anything for a sale. Sent back to the Fiat garage we bought it from, still in warranty as only just got it. Hopefully they don't hit us with the usual crap.

Will find out the damage tomorrow, will keep posted.

I got an oil pressure warning this morning and I think the lamp stayed on for a little longer than usual but yet again it is quite cold this winter:

Perhaps some of our northern members could share if this warning is occurring during startups in the cold winter morning (y)
