Technical Engine questions

Hey everyone,

I've got a couple of questions which I hope someone might be able to answer:

What are the tappet settings for a 650 engine? Are these settings hot or cold?

Is it ok to use 20w50 oil?

I believe its 0.15mm Matt although I"m saying this from memory and not a book. I use 20w50 oil and had no problems

Hi Matt,

From the workshop manual for a standard 652cc, 126 engine:

Valve clearances should be set with the engine dead cold.

Inlet 0.20mm (0.0078") & exhaust 0.25mm (0.0098").

A 20W40 or 20W50 mineral oil is fine.

Afternoon Matt;
When I questioned Tony Castle-Miller about which oil to use in my 500 (fitted with a, now tuned, 652cc '1216' engine) his recommendation was '10/60' oil. The little air-cooled engine can get very hot and that in his opinion, this spec. of oil gives better protection when the engine does get very hot. Notwithstanding that advice, I have used a GOOD quality 20/50 with no noticeable detrimental effects,----yer pays yer money and makes yer choice

I've seen 10/60 recommended a lot for classic cars of many types. At the moment I'm using straight SAE 40 which I use on my other classic, but that's not really a good idea long term. I will use 20 50 if the 10 60 proves hard to get locally.
