Hi all,

First time posting, and hope you can help.

My clutch has gone by the looks of it, gears very hard to find, screeching sound when pedal pressed in...

Could this be lack of fluid in the master cylinder or do I need to call the garage to rob me of my hard earned cash??

Could anyone direct me as to where the cylinder is so I can check just to see what's happening.

Or how easy is it to change the clutch???

Many thanks

Simon

Hi. It does sound like a dead clutch, not a very hard job but you need the right tools, equipment and knowledge of what you’re doing.

Have you tried bleeding the slave cylinder? Bit of air in them clutches and they play up big time - bleeding valve is likeva circlip youll find it on a hose just below your air inlet hose just lift clip for a min or so then push it back down see if its improved

Hi Simon, Welcome to the FF.

The clutch master cylinder is located engine side of the bulkhead in front of the clutch pedal, however the fluid resevoir for it is shared with the brake fluid resevoir located near the fuel filter.

Hi all,

If you get a screeching as soon as you put the clutch pedal down, with the car in gear or not, the fault is the clutch release (thrust) bearing. Unless the car has done low mileage, plan on changing the whole clutch, the labour is more the parts. Also the fingers the bearing presses on may have been damaged.

Car has done a lot of miles, coming up for 170K, the clutch has always had a high bite point on it and I knew it would need doing at some point.

Is there a guide to doing it around, I'm fairly mechanically minded, I've got a Land Rover too and have stripped and rebuilt it so not much scares me, or do you know a rough cost for a garage to do it??
