... Change from a Stilo JTD 115 to an Abarth

I am having my car remapped next week and I am just wondering if this would be as much fun power wise as an Abarth would?

What do people think of there JTD's after a remap? Is the extra power hugely noticeable? I dont know about anyone else's JTD but mine is really sluggish pre-turbo and uphill the revs drop alot and i have to change gear (small hills), hoping a remap will solve this.

Opinions please ...

Re-map done properly is very noticeable (see my Sig below) very much worth the £200.

You may have a fault, worth finding and fixing that first.

Changing cars can be expensive and Stilo's dont exactly have high residual values, but the Abarth (Stilo?) has other enhancements.

I shoulda got the MJet. Acted to fast on the new car I think. Ah well, I love my car so I'll go a head with the remap. +38bhp he reckons so we'll see how it goes. Yeah I think I have a fault too, uphill foot to the floor revs just die and black smoke comes out the exhaust. Ive taken off and cleaned EGR, this helped the smoke a bit but not the sluggishness, now its smoking again.

Ok, so I really wanna get this problem fixed now, ive lived with it a while. However I don't want to take it to Fiat and explain my problem because I cant afford for them to change parts when they are not defective, I dont have that kind of money at the moment. So I have have cleaned EGR vlave (although botch job) prob dirty again now. what else could be the problem for a JTD being sluggish pre-turbo, when car is losing revs simply pressing the accelerator further generates no torque just alot of smoke and no power meaning I have to change gear, usually 2 gears seems by the time I have changed gear i've lost more revs and lost more power. Annoying really. But what are the things I would be asking Fiat to check on this sort of problem. I've had enough of it now.

It wont!

You need to use the box just like with a petrol.

JTD's are just devastating on hills and it's my favourite time to overtake

Check your 40-80 timings in 3rd and 50-100 in 4th

At what rpm does the turbo spool and you start feeling the torque and power of the car? Diesel engines are low-rpm engines, you can't expect them to be like racing engines. It is normal to go a gear back when climbing a hill.
A simple remap won't help you much with low rpm, cause there you can't put too much torque because of the flywheel ... otherwise it will be damaged.
Some JTD remaps make the turbo spool at 1900 rpm and generate max torque/power there, not at 2000 rpm like it is with the standard software, but that won't help you much below these rpms.

Answers in order they are presented.

Power wise it beats the Abarth (remapped) and much more fun

Outstanding and very noticeable difference immediately

JTD powers up hills, you have a problem but doesn't sound like a big one. Are you getting a whooshing noise? As Hellcat mentioned, classic case of intercooler hose broken.

thing is though I dont wanna take it in and have it changed only to not be fixed. Grrr, is a split hose something I could see myself to check if it is split and if it is I will take it in.

I dont think its justifyable, and I own an abarth. That being said I wouldnt buy a diesel one as I dont like diesel cars (well the ones I have driven).

Im lucky, mine is very reliable but most arent. Like everyone says get your JTD running right and youll be keeping up with abarths with less hassle and more change in your pocket.

If I was going to change the Stilo it would be for another car altogether.

Yeah if someone can tell me how to check it my intercooler hose is split ill get it booked in and get the remap done and ill be happy.

If you don't want to check yourself then any self-respecting garage should be able to tell you if your intercooler hose is split (it's normally the stop valve side - nearest the bulkhead).

If it's not split then I'd block off your EGR system (just to prove if it's faulty or not) as simply cleaning is not conclusive.
