Hi, My Wife's 2005 Fiat Multipla 1.9 JTD just failed the MOT with excessive high emission readings, in point of fact the tester stated that the whole workshop filled with black smoke, and he also pointed out the black sooty deposits covering his floor.
So went home, and plugged the car into the computer running MultiEcuScan, And it showed fault code P0110, air temperature sensor high signal. I then checked further, and my air temperature was recorded as -34.5 C, and the voltage was 5V.
The MAF sensor was changed last July with a genuine Bosch unit, but I unplugged the MAF sensor surmising it had gone faulty, exactly the same readings, so I am wondering where to go next any help and advise will be gratefully accepted.

Many thanks in advance Peter

unplugging the MAF sensor may cause the the ecu to give the readings you see, do not rule out the MAF sensor being faulty at this point.

OK, will try to locate the old MAF sensor, and will try that tomorrow thank you for the suggestion

Hi,
air temperature sensor is part of the MAP (Manifold Air Pressure) sensor, not MAF. It's on the back of the inlet manifold.

Fairly low cost.

I have just run multiecu scan on my multi.
Unplugging the MAF causes the ecu to read +5v which the ecu interoperates as -34.5 degrees C.

Unplug your MAF look into socket checking for bent pins.

Next step is try a known good MAF.

Keep your fingers crossed it is the MAF and not broken wire somewhere.

I am not disagreeing with g8rpi, did not see his post before posting mine.
If you have the old MAP and it was not causing air temp reading problem probably easy to try that first. No need to fit to intake tube or have engine running to read air temp with multiecu.

Hi,
I may not have been totally clear, The MAF can provide temperature signals but it is pre compression / intercooling. Most if not all JTD's use the MAP temperature. For my Croma MES shows both temperatures, MP and MAF but for a Multi it only shows one but it's labled as MAP or MAF.
There is info on the MAP location here
https://www.fiatforum.com/multipla/256677-map-sensor-location-115-jtd.html
So I may be wrong for your engine, if @jackwhoo sees good temperature with MAF and bad without, it's likely the MAF temperature being read. However if the MAF has wrong temperature internally, the flow will be wrong too. This raises the possibilty of a bad connection if the flow looks OK.

Robert G8RPI.

Just checked and ther seem to be two version of MAP for the 2005 1.9 Multipla. Which one depends on exact model (hp) 105hp, 115hp or 120 hp. at least one does not have temperature.
You can tell for certain by the MAP connector. If it has 3 pins there is no temperature signal, if it has four or five it probably has temperature.
Something else I learnt today.

outstandingly good points, I'm learning which great.

my multi is a 2003 115hp jtd
On mine with ECU EDC15C7 CF3, MES shows air temp in parameters but not point at which measured, we have worked out earlier that it is measured at the MAF . For information my MAF has 5 leads.

pgrant5 has a 2005 , not known if multijet or jtd .

if pgrant5's ECU is EDC16C39 CF4 MES should show location of air temp measurement in parameters.

MES for diesel multipla 02 onward there are two selectable ECU options, depending on which ECU fitted to the car.

The available parameters for each are slightly different.

The second ECU CF4 appears to be for multijet as 5 injection pulses are shown in parameters.
Second option can also show where air temperature is being measured, MAF or Boost/manifold.

All interesting reading.<br />

CF3 JTD uses a different (and quite a lot more expensive) MAF to the earlier CF2 engines. There is an extra wire (possibly 2?) which provides some kind of feedback to the ECU. I've never looked into the exact purpose of the extra connection. I don't know anything about JTDm MAFs as they're only on squarenoses!

Hi,

All sorted the MAP sensor only had 3 wires, replaced the new MAF sensor with the old MAF, and the IAT is now reading ambient temperature and the voltage is reading 2.5V. I have now passed the MOT the smoke readings with the old MAF were 6 points lower. Thank you everyone for all your kind advice.

Regards

Peter
