The car has not been started for a few weeks as I did the work on the brakes etc (and still am ). However I started up the engine yesterday and noticed a rubbing/squeaking that I couldn't isolate. Assuming the link below works, does anyone recognise what this could be? It is the regular cricket-like "chirp" if you can hear it above the smooth twin cylinders purring

Spray the pulley with WD 40 the noise should go

A WD40 spray behind the pulley might do for now, but I see a possible bearing replacement on the horizon for your generator.

Andrew...take the belt of...a minute's work, and then turn the dynamo pulley by hand. You will feel a rough bearing or hear/feel if the impeller is catching. It might als be a nut or something that has dropped somewhere in the region of the pulleys and is catching.
