General wobbly gear stick on Cinq

I have just driven home and the gear stick is very wobbly even when in gear. I can get all forward gears but not reverse.
Does anyone know what is causing all this play and how to fix it?
Has it got cables or rod/s that select the gears?

I'm guessing it's a Cinq. If so, there's a reverse inhibitor cable which, if it snaps, will prevent you engaging reverse.

The system is cable operated. If the reverse inhibitor cable is broken you'd expect some extra play. If it is, you'll have to poke around in the little box beneath the gearever and in the area where all the cables attach to the box itself. Just check for play where there should be none, loose bolts, cracked brackets, missing clips, and so on.
