Hi, I've recently bought my first Cinquecento (Sporting) & I'm having some trouble. The water in expansion tank is boiling over if I remove the cap. The oil is clean & the temperature gauge stays at 90 degrees. Is this likely to be a head gasket? I thought Cinq 1100 were not bad for head gaskets?

Hi, no it doesn't overheat, but I thought this shouldn't happen? I've had a few cars before & the cap could be removed without this problem with the engine running. I always thought if the water boiled over when removing the cap there was too much pressure in the system?

While it's true that Cinq 1100 run close to the limit, this is what I'd expect. The reason there is a pressure cap there is so that the water will boil at a higer temperature. Remove the pressure cap and you get instant boiling at the hot spots deep within the engine.

Conversely, I'm told that you can't make a decent cup of tea on Everest because the air pressure is so low that the water boils at a relatively low temperature. ;)

All sounds as normal to me.
