Timing is done from #4 (not the conventional #1). The correct timing mark is on the *back* of the cam pulley (ignore anything you see on the front after removing the cover). Most cars have a window in the bellhousing too that allows you to see a timing mark on the flywheel - assuming of course that you can actually see past all the ancillaries...
Or you could use the timing mark on the crank pulley. For your year of engine there will be a small toothed plate at about 10 o'clock behind the crank pulley with 0, 5 and 10 degrees on it if it's anything like the Euro engines.
