Technical Third Gear Jumping Out

Writing this post on behalf of my dad he's 82 years old with a Tipo 1.4 DGT, has got 72,000 genuine miles on a "H" plate. It's his pride and joy!
Thing is, just recently, on occasions it is starting to jump out of 3rd gear (light grinding sound) all other gears are O.K.
Wouldn't want to see him get ripped off, so does anyone think it is the actual gearbox or a problem with the selector rods.....
Appreciate a problem like this is hard to diagnose without inspecting the car but just wondered if anyone had any opinons etc....

Selector rod pivot point on the steering rack. Not sure if its a seizing up, or a loosening off problem - but that will be the cause. Pretty soon you'll see it jumping out of 5th and 1st. Take it apart, clean it up and re-assemble. Think that should solve it.

The gearbox would probably appreciate some nice clean oil as well... easy job.
