Hi,

Now and then the starter motor fails to turn over the engine. The motor sounds like it's working, but it isn't turning the engine. If I leave it a minute and try again it usually works. If all else fails, push the car forward a yard and then it works. Something is sticking somewhere ? Could it be a worn pinion or faulty solenoid ? How easy is it to fix these ? The car is R reg and done 95,000 + miles.

Thanks

Mine sometimes does it too - I'd assumae that all the salt and grit of the road gets into the pre-engage solenoid and causes it to stick.

Here come da judge...

Strip it down, check the condition of the pinion teeth, make sure that the solenoid plunger moves freely and lube every moving part :)
And pray that it ain't the flyweel ring gear as that is a whore to replace. Job for a dealer or a very competent garage.
