Hi all

Our pipe is split along its length, is this a DIY achievable fix with minimum experience!>?
Any links to obtain a new pipe, or would you all recommend a visit to a local garage to save the hassle

Many thanks

J

How old is the car, when was it serviced by Fiat...... tell us the full story of the car because tbh your car shouldn't even have that design of breather pipe anymore!

Thank you for the reply, we purchased the car a year ago, from a private dealer. It's a 59 plate Lounge. The service book shows a service completed in 2011, so is well due for a little attention under the bonnet

I've done one myself - it's a straightforward DIY fix.

I bought a new type OEM replacement via ebay from Research garage Nuneaton; £12.39 including postage & the service was excellent.

Cut the old one in half (it's easier to remove the clips once the airbox is off), unbolt the airbox (2 bolts on the box itself, and a small one securing the intake to the front panel, if it hasn't already fallen out or been lost by the dealer during a service) and lift it away from the engine, carefully removing the small hose from the rear fitting as you do so. The only thing to watch out for is the plastic fitting at the back of the airbox; it's fragile & some have been ruined by franchised dealers when replacing the breather.

With the airbox off, it's a simple matter to undo the clips & remove the remaining bits of breather.

If you haven't done one before, I don't recommend trying to do it with the airbox in place; it's all too easy to break that fragile fitting at the back.

The new ones are a modified type which don't fail prematurely, but some early cars had their breathers replaced under warranty with the old type (n); these will certainly fail again after 2-3 years at most.

Just done a quick search on ebay - there are loads out there and this link seems as good as any at £9.99 including postage.

Don't be frightened about having a go yourself, even if you only have minimal experience - just come back if you get stuck, and we'll help you out.

Alternatively, if you go to an independent garage for a full service (and it sounds like you need one), take a replacement breather with you, they'll almost certainly fit it free as part of the service - they've got to remove the airbox anyway.

Thank you very much for the tip, found replacement hose on eBay £10! Are the retaining clips easy to remove and fix back on. Many thanks again

They are easily removed once the airbox is off - hence my suggestion to cut the old pipe first.

When replacing, fix & clip the breather at the back of the airbox before refitting, leaving just the front fitting to the rocker box to be put back once the airbox is replaced. Access to the rear fitting is a little awkward with the airbox in place, and remember the rear fitting is fragile.

Remember also to replace the small breather hose when refitting the airbox.

And for Maxi - it seems you spoke too soon ;).
