I'm a lucky one who has had both engines
the 1.9 is great if your doing allot of millage. Gearbox problems arise when you don't drive it properly. the 6th gear is synthetic and can't take stress, hence the usual failure everybody talks about
this is caused by people flooring the pedal in 6th to chase the ST that just over took them etc etc.
I recently got rid of mine as I no longer was doing high millage on a daily basis so swapped to a 1.4 to have some petrol fun
I remember reading a post you made a while ago about that 6th gear, you will have probarly saved a gearbox issue for me in the future, although the other day i floored the nuts out of 6th to keep up with some 182 nob. Never again
hay guys n girls I need some advice, I am torn between the 1.4 t-jet and the 1.9 multi-jet sporting, its going to be modified and I know some people have gotten 200bhp out of both so I would like to know what one would be the best and most cost effective in doing so any help is much appreciated.
To get serious power out of the tjet you need a new turbo as one of the first mods you do ive seen someone on facebook with a tjet running 160bhp on stock turbo though.
Theres also the displacement thing, you have a 1.4, not a well tuned 1.4 16v turbo, just a 1.4, not the best thing to brag about
Of course a 1.9 turbo sounds much better (when you say it, not when your sat idling the car, that sounds like a tractor)
I got a mjet mainly because they're easy to tune, and I suppose i do a decent amount of miles too but I also wanted the low down torque, and just to try a diesel as my own car and not my old driving instructors car
I put a cone filter on, blocked the EGR, took both cats out (2007 to 2008 models have 2 cats, 2008 - xx has one cat and a DPF,) got it remapped after a good service and I'm running a safe 175bhp, could go higher but the turbo will be a bit stressed out, to go further from the mods i mentioned you'll need a new intercooler, new hybrid turbo (about 950 quid) and so forth.
Theres the gearbox issues from the m32 that everyone mentions but tbh I just dont usually touch 6th gear apart from cruising, and if i need to accelerate just put it back into 5th, my 5th gear pulls like 3rd
.
Change the gearbox oil every 1-2 years with fuchs sintofluid 75w-80 and it should be fine, theres people that trash their mjets about and have no problems, theres people that drive like grandmas and have problems, the main 2 factors are 6th gear and the box oil, all cars can have box problems, my old 1.2 8v needed a new gearbox, not likes there was really much power running through that is there
Of course there's the fun of having a turbo petrol, when i go out in middlesbrough town every saturday theres this tjet driving about that sounds unreal! FInally managed to get his attention bank holiday and ask him about it hahah, an mjet can still sound good but nothing like a petrol
TLDR, mjet is easy to tune decently and overall faster than tjet, tjet is a nice high revving turbo petrol which are always fun, some people have problems with mjet gearbox but that can be somewhat avoided.
Sorry for the long reply I'm a bit bored
