Hi

I'm new here but wondered if you might be able to help me choose whether to go for the Lounge or the Sport. I'm a mum of 2 in my late 30s and am sorely tempted by the S but I wonder if I'm just trying to buy the car I really wanted as a 19 year old and whether I'll regret it and wish I had gone for the more classic Lounge in a couple of months time!!

So...

....can you give me the pros and cons of both if you own them already?

Also, any views on whether to go for the Twinair or Multijet. I'm mainly an out of town driver on main roads and country roads to get to work and school runs. I do between 30 and 60 miles per day. I'm leaning towards the MJ but could be persuaded either way. Test driving both tonight so views in advance would be appreciated.

Thank you! (y)

If you fit stereotypes, go for the Lounge. What (may) appeal about it is the big glass roof making it light and airy, and the body coloured dash. Plus you can have the ivory ambiance. Contrast with the S which has a more "manly" dark interior, steering wheel and bodywork.

Engine wise, the diesel will be ok with your mileage (around town it can be problematic, if it never gets a chance to stretch its legs). If economy is not that important to you, or if you can be retrained when necessary, I would take the Twin Air over the Massey Ferguson. On a purely maths based calculation I suspect that accounting for purchase price, residual value, consumption and fuel price, there would not be a huge amount in it either way. Probably the TA would win it.

But, as ever, it is down to you - drive both engines back to back, and sit in both trims.

Good luck.

We have a 1.2 Lounge and a Twinair (previous to Street and S version)
Looks wise, I guess it's down to which 'look' you like best. The ivory ambience looks fantastic on the lounge. The Lounge is very 'classic 500' in appearance and the S looks like a baby Abarth, very sporty.
There is no right or wrong, it's what appeals to you the most. Don't buy what you perceive 'others' think you should. Go with your heart as a 500 of any type is a great 'head' choice based on what you mentioned above.
TA or Diesel? Tough one. Don't discount the 1.2 either as its a gem of an engine, quieter and more refined than the TA or D and very economical too. It's not as gutsy as the TA or D though.
Let us know what you thought after your test drives : )

Yet again, The Twins have it covered
Its all down to personal taste...
We have a 500 S TA.... A very 'fun' engine :D and would 100% recommend to anyone

Yep, totally agree, for fun factor and character the TA is the engine to go for.
I have done 20k miles in my TA in just 8 months. Don't expect anywhere near the advertised economy though. Overall over 000's of miles it returns mid 40's.
I think Fiat market the TA all wrong and folks assume that because it the smallest engine that it is not the 'performance' choice. It is!
The 1.2 can be overall more economical than the Twinair too.
Don't get me wrong, drive the TA really carefully and it can return 60mpg on a trip but conversely I can get it down to the high 30's if I loon about a bit.
I'm not really a Diesel fan so not really the best person to be subjective about that option.
Hope this helps ;)

Some how feel that you don't fall into the typical stereotype...

I've had the Sport 500 (Black) and the Lounge 500 (Funk White) and I preferred the Lounge with the white ambiance and extra light from the Fixed sunroof. The Sport was faster than the Lounge since one with a Opening sunroof is supposedly carrying a weight penalty of 100kgs - unsure of the weight of the Fixed glass roof. I also preferred the Sports seats of the 500 Sport (although mine had the leather ones - very similar seat) - the Lounge ones became a little uncomfortable on long journeys and I seemed to move about in them a bit in the twisties. In both cases it was in the 1.4L. If you're doing 15K p.a. seats are important.

Normally drive a MiTo Multi-jet around 2-3 days per week during the day (off the road at the moment) and a MiTo Turbo petrol (same engine as the A500) for my own personal car. There's no comparison in the 2 with the Petrol being much quieter and smoother. Fuel consumption wise it would be 50mpg verus 35 mpg but I can squeeze 40mpg out of the petrol if I'm a little more sensible. If you are doing 15K miles per year IMHO the multi-jet is not a contender. In the 500 the MJ is in a specialist category of it's own where it can excel on the motorway but with the weight in the nose it not that well balanced on the back roads plus it's noisey. The MJ does better in a bigger bodied car (more sound insulation) and even then I would hesitate to recommend it in the likes of say a MiTo.

The 1.2 Petrol engine serves many well, and with only 2 kids in the car whilst delivering decent mpg it should have enough bhp for the motorway and the back roads. It the right hands the Twin Air can deliver decent mpg but you have to slug it in the higher gears. Mpg can drop to the mid 30s in the wrong hands. It excels in Stop start traffic when the S/S is working. TA can give great performance but on the other hand great economy but not at the same time. Looking at the APR rates on the Finance deals Fiat are offering 3.6% on the Lounge TA (£179) whilst on the Lounge 1.2 (£159) it's 6% (Click here). Have no figures for the 500S.

If you did decide to spec up the TA you would be touching on Abarth 500 money and on a Finance deal they have tried to keep the monthly payments down to £199 (6.9% APR) but that's over a 4 year period as opposed to 3 years on the F500. It has a higher excess mileage of over 10K as opposed to 6K on he F500 with 6p per mile charged. Unsure of the reliability of the A500 compared with say a 500 1.2 particularly in Year 4 when it's out of warranty. But if you like the 500S and you're looking to drive the car that you would have as a 19 year old then I wouldn't discount a stealth (no stripes) basic BNW A500 with 16 inch alloys. It should return around 40mpg and it will be fun to drive. From a safety point of view it has ample power for overtaking, better brakes, ESP as standard, fog lights, etc. Also on the new A500 comes with Koni FSD (more comfortable) front shocks as standard. It will be a better overall handling car. But you would have to negotiate even harder on servicing costs.

For comparative purposes the above examples have a balloon payment of c.£5.5K in year 3 for the F500 & year 4 for the A500 to keep the car or you can hand it back.

Gut answer (to keep costs down) is a 500S 1.2 standard 15 sporty alloys in BNW with Climate control.

P.S. Recent thread on here where one individual negotiated a rate of £129 per month for a 1.2 Lounge which in hindsight was an excellent.

That's a very balance view loveshandbags.
And now there is an Abarth in the mix :yum:

It's a pity that it's a 4 year commitment on the A500. Noticed somewhere else that a A500SS broke at cambelt at 38K and some reports of ECUs having to be replaced which means that buying new can work out cheaper. Unfortunately there was no simple answer !

Choose the sport version!!!!
I also have it.
But the lounge is cute too (especially for the roof) ❤❤❤

500S TA with sun roof for me looks fantastic, nothing wrong with wanting to be 19 again....

That sounds like the diesel would be more economically in the long run, if that factors in. Performance-wise, I wouldn’t expect much difference. If you go, like me, for the Lounge, I’d spec the opening sunroof (Skydome), because with the glass roof the interior can get quite hot in the summer and I appreciate being able to vent the car quickly. However, if you’re tall, and sit upright, note that the sliding roof does take away quite a bit of headroom. Personally, I don’t care much for boy racer touches like wings/spoilers, and I’d rather avoid tinted windows as I like be able to see things around me even when it’s dark. Moreover, as you mention you do school runs, perhaps consider how long you expect to keep the car, and how tall your passengers will grow during that time. The back seats are hardly suited for grown people.
